"...well, he looked like the Invisible Man."
"So, bandages around the head, glasses, that kind of thing?"

"Well, yea, yea I guess you could say that. I asked if he was ok, and he mentioned something about having "Lost his face in a fire" and he volunteered for a super experimental skin-graft operation that would give him some sense of normalcy" Rodgers explained.
"Well in light of that, I suppose I should ask..."

"...did he seem at all hindered by the bandages?"
"As in, were they 'holding him back' in his day to day activities?"
"Yes."
"Well..."

"...as far as I could tell, not really. I didn't see him much, but he was functioning like a normal human being" Rodgers explained.
Mason, satisfied continued. "Tell me this..."

"Hmm... that's an interesting question..."

"...and unfortunately I cannot answer it, because I saw so little of him" Rodgers admitted.
"How many times would you say you saw him?" Mason asked.
"During the month? Probably only 4 or 5 times" Rodgers replied.
"Then focus on when you did see him" Mason explained.
"Well, the only real thing of note I can mention is..."

"Nothing else?"
"I don't think... well actually, there was something else..."

...more than once he kept looking around the building; in and out- almost like he was planning something or measuring something" Rodgers explained.
"Was he acting strangely during these periods?" Mason asked

"Not sure if he was 'acting' strangely, but he was a strange character nonetheless."
"I see."

"So tell me this... did he ever take his bandages off?" Mason asked.
"Well, about 4 days before the shooting, I saw him one last time. He was in his apartment with his door open. In fact his bandages were off, and when I saw the back of his head, what I made out was..."

"Well, to be quite frank, I'm not sure. It was in another language. It might have been German, but the man didn't have a German accent... more of an Irish accent, come to think of it."
"I see. So, where on his body was this tattoo?
"Where his hair was. I assume he got it to cover the bald spot."
Mason nodded. "So, did you see his face?"
"Yes I did. And if you're going where I think you're going, let me just say, he looked nothing like Gunnarson. His face really was badly burnt, he was missing an eye, he had scars along the entire left side of his face, and his nose was smashed in. Not only that, but he had a much more prominent Adam's Apple than Gunnarson did."
"Well sir, you seem to have a very good eye for detail. I don't suppose you remember anything interesting about his surroundings?" Mason asked.

(Didn't see that coming; no worries, I can work with this)
"Well, that's just it... he seemed to have all these detailed blueprints and layouts on the distant wall... they resembled the apartment building; if I had to take a guess he was mapping out the place" Rodgers said.
"Yes; and those papers are in fact within this box. Was there anything else you saw in the apartment that day?" Mason asked.
"Well, yes. On the table near the wall I was able to make out a..."

At the prosecution's table, Taylor was now furious. "Your honor, this witness is not making any sense! I will concede that for a little while, it looked like we were getting somewhere, but the last few questions have yielded answers that are trivial nonsense! What does a picture of the Virgin Mary have to do with the case of the City of London versus Adolf Gunnarson!? I therefore motion that this witness step down immediately and this round of questioning be stricken from the record!" He boomed.
Gunnarson suddenly felt nervous, and even Mason flinched a bit as the judge gave serious thought to this motion.
"Mr. Taylor does make a valid point..." the judge began

"...BUT I'm rather interested in seeing what Mr. Mason has up his sleeve - he's never disappointed yet in clearing up a court case, and whilst I'm confused, I am curious as to what he's doing."
"Thank you, your honor. Now then, Mr. Rodgers..."
"Objection your honor! Even if you are interested in seeing what Mr. Mason has up his sleeve, that does not excuse the fact that trivial, repetitive and meaningless testimony is expressly prohibited under the rules of testimony" Taylor interjected. "And the Mason you are thinking of is Mr. Mason's father Walter, sir; Terry Mason is his son who only recently took over their firm" Taylor added.
"Oh; I see. Well, that objection is sustained. Mr. Mason I am sorry, but Mr. Taylor is absolutely correct; if you cannot get Mr. Rodgers to yield meaningful testimony on the next question, I will fulfill Mr. Taylor's motion" the judge warned.
"I understand Your honor; now Mr. Rodgers...

"There is really only one more question I can ask- did you ever see this man interact with anyone else?" Mr. Mason asked.
Rodgers thought about it before finally speaking, "Well, now that you mention it..."

"...the only time I saw him interacting with someone was with this one man who came to his apartment."
"Can you describe this man?"
"Let's see... brown hair... not skinny but not fat body... come to think of it, he looked a lot like... YOU!"

Mason was taken aback.
"Me? But that's ridiculous!"
"No, it makes perfect sense." Taylor countered. "Frame Gunnarson for a crime with no hope of proving his innocence, and then successfully acquit him to gain prestige as a lawyer!"
"You're not seriously considering this, are you?" Mason asked, annoyed.
"Oh, it adds up quite well. I know both you and the accused well enough to say this: Gunnarson may subvert the law at times and carry a gun around for no clear reason, but he's no murderer. You on the other hand, are a lying, incompetent lawyer who frequently makes obvious gaffes. You wouldn't be above this sort of thing. Heck, even in this trial you ignored the number one rule of cross-examination: never ask the witness questions you don't know the answers to, lest they contradict your case."

"Excuse me," said Rodgers. "I did not say 'YOU!' to Mr. Mason. I was addressing you... Mr. Taylor!"
