"If Gunnarson did NOT commit the murder and someone else did, he'd have to look a lot like Gunnarson. And the way to do that would be by going to a doctor and having him reconstruct their body."

"But that bill in and of itself proves nothing" the judge pointed out.
"Very true. So let's give it some context. This next piece of paper shows..."

"...a gun bill."
"But if the weapon was Gunnarson's, why would there be another bill?"
"Because, your honor..."

"The killer wanted to be sure all bases were covered" Mason explained.
"But the bullets were scientifically linked to Gunnarson's gun and it was found on his person with all bullets fired; what does this prove?" The judge asked.
"Well your honor, based on the circumstances, the only logical conclusion is..."

"...that Adolf Gunnarson was the killer."
Everyone stared at Mason.
Gunnarson stared at Mason.
I stared at Mason.
There was a silence.
Then Mason continued.
"I wanted to see your reactions to that. Not everyone's... but one person specifically..."

"Really, who?" The judge asked.
"You would think it would be someone who has it out for Gunnarson, like Mr. Taylor or Detective Walton. But no, there is someone here who has slipped under the radar until now. Someone who has resented Gunnarson for so long, but dare not show his face. Someone like... you!" Mason said, pointing into the audience.
I tried to look, but found it hard. "Wait, who is that?" I thought to myself.
Mason continued, "That's right, I am talking about..."

"...Thomas Rodgers."
"ME?!" cried Rodgers.
"That's right. Mr. Rodgers was the murderer."
"IT'S A LIE!" cried Rodgers.
"Oh is it now? Thomas Rodgers... please take the stand!"

"Objection!" Mr. Taylor called out. "This is absurd! Not only did he pass the polygraph test, but Mr. Rodgers looks NOTHING like Gunnarson!"
Indeed, Mr. Rodgers was shorter, a good 20 years younger, had dark brown hair and was clean shaven. He looked nothing like the Swede.
In the commotion, I whispered to Mason "What are you doing? That has nothing to do with the evidence you just presented!"

"Don't worry, I figured out a plan."
"I still reserve my right to have Thomas Rodgers take the stand, Mr. Taylor..."

"But if his testimony is irrelevant or trivial, I have every right to stop it" The judge reminded Mason
"Yes; apologies your honor. But I do sincerely believe Mr. Rodgers here holds the key to solving what actually happened" He explained.
"...very well. Proceed" The judge said
The accountant neighbor once again took the stand, and Mason started the questioning.
"The first thing I want to ask..."

"...and I know I asked this before, but you cannot truly know for sure that it was Gunnarson you saw, but you are sure within your own mind that you did in fact witness Mr. Adolf Gunnarson shoot his neighbor, correct?"
|

"I can only go based on what I saw and heard; and I heard the neighbor identify the shooter as Gunnarson just before he was shot; and a saw the profile of a man that looked like Gunnarson" Rodgers explained.

"Objection your honor! If Mr. Mason is going to ask Mr. Rodgers the same questions as last time, then there is no point in having him testify again" Taylor pointed out.
"Hmm, yes a valid point. Mr. Mason, there better be some sort of reasoning behind this other than asking him the same questions again" The judge said sternly.
"Well your honor, what I am trying to show is..."

"Mr. Rodgers, when you think back to that moment, was there anything that just seemed "off" about it; like there was something about the whole scenario that just doesn't seem right?" Mason asked.
Mr. Rodgers thought for a minute before at last coming to a conclusion, "well, I suppose it is worth mentioning..."

"...I just never would have expected Adolf Gunnarson to commit a murder. I mean, in a mystery novel the detective might be guilty, but in real life? It seemed strange to be honest."
"I see. My next question is..."

"...in regard to this "mystery neighbor" that was right next door to Gunnarson; are you aware of the new tenant there?"
"Yes; I had remembered seeing him when he moved in; been awfully secretive though, haven't seen him around much" Rodgers explained.
"Interesting. So what can you tell me about this tenant?" Mason asked.
"Well, I suppose there is this one thing I should mention. It was rather strange, but when I saw him the day he moved in..."

"...a box. That box right there" he said, indicating what was present in the court.
"Ok; but what about the man himself?" Mason asked.
"Well, I looked at his face and; well I didn't see one" Rodgers said
"huh?" Mason asked.
"Well, yea, barring two eyeholes, I saw a head covered in thick bandages, and..."
