I saw Taylor get away from the fake Gunnarson; fortunately it was a shot to the shoulder. It was complete chaos as the court was emptied and help began to arrive.
......
In the end, we never did learn the motive; the answers died with the murderer. It frustrates me now, even a week after the trial
(Not the end; only a time skip)

Luckily my leg wasn't too badly injured. Everything in life seemed to return to normal - Gunnarson was back as good as new, but there was one small thing... Cricket and my wedding...

(Sorry to prolong the story, but Chekhov's gun)
I was really looking forward to the wedding and getting married to her, but there was still one obstacle in our way. Her father's lawyer delivered it to me while in hospital.
"A restraining order?! You can't do this to me!" I said.
"He can and he has; should you ever come within 100 meters of Ms. Phillipa Earnest or her home, you will be arrested and put in prison. Mr. Earnest has made it very clear that you are forbidden from ever seeing her again" the lawyer said.
"I will fight you on this, you mark my words" I warned sternly.
"You can try; but you don't have much of a case" the lawyer dryly said as he left.
I screamed in frustration before picking up a phone and giving my lawyer a call

(NOTE: this post now voided) However, as soon as the restraining order was put in place, it came off again quite strangely...
Apparently, Mr. Earnest had heard about my solving a murder case, read up upon it, and was pleasantly surprised. Thus, he had the restraining order removed, congratulated me on a job well done, and had no objections to my marrying his daughter.
I know, I thought it was anti-climatic too.
But long story short, Cricket and I were married, and Gunnarson was best man. It was a splendid time for all who were present... Stein... Mr. Earnest... Hastings... Robert... but most of all, me and my new bride....
THE END

Well, while we are waiting for LM 13 to continue, might as well do some work on the LMs that have weaker parts that need fixing.
This is no exception- let's face it guys, this has got to be the weakest, most forced ending in the series; and both Tug and I are not particularly fond of it. If we want to get there, we need to flow it naturally, not force this ending; therefore we need to either get a new conclusion, or develop this more. So let's pick up from the phone call.
......
We must have talked for half an hour, but in the end my lawyer said the same thing- there was not much of a case, and taking to court, I would surely lose. "I'm sorry Mr Hartley, but there is little that can be done; quite frankly it sounds like Mr Earnest's reasoning is justified" the lawyer explained.
"So that's it then? Well, thanks anyway Donald" I said before hanging up and just staring into space.
......
"There's nothing more to say about it Philippa! The restraining order is in place, he can never come near you again!" Mr. Earnest said.
"But why would you keep me away from my love?!" She screamed
"Open your eyes, you are NOT in love! You feel passionate feelings towards someone who saved you, not the man himself!" Her father boomed.
"No... that's not true! Our relationship is more than that!" Cricket insisted.
"No it is not! Nobody gets married after knowing each other only a month! Do you even know anything about your ex-fiancé? His family? His home?" He pointed out.
"Yes! He's a nice man, he helps Mr Gunnarson from time to time, and...and..." and just then, she realized her father was absolutely right- she knew nothing about Hartley himself.
"Exactly. And what is so great about Gunnarson anyway? He regularly subverts the law just so he can play detective!"
"But... but Hartley solved the murder! He cleared Gunnarson's name!" She said.
"I don't care if he figured out who Jack the Ripper is! He is a pathetic excuse of a man who does not deserve someone like you. There will be no more discussion on this Philippa; if he ever comes near us or this home again, he will go to prison" Mr Earnest finished as he left Cricket alone in her room. Cricket sat on her bed and realized the hopelessness of the situation.

For the next two weeks, we never saw or spoke to each other- her father ensuring that I never came near her. But we still knew that we loved each other, and waited patiently until our chance had come. On the one hand, something just didn't feel right about all this... but on the other... I feel that this is something meant to be.
One evening, we were able to meet in the dead of night while her father was asleep, and she explained to me that in a few months, he would be going on holiday, and during that time, he wouldn't really care about what was going on at home. Once he left, she said, we could take our own holiday, and finally get a proper chance to get married... even if there was that voice telling me to slow things down and get to know her first. But why do I feel this is something I'm ok with?
When the time finally came, Gunnarson had an interesting proposal... someone had recently invited him to come have a visit to his cave system, and he extended his offer to me and "a friend." It was in the right time period, and so we decided to join him. On the way there, we stopped at a courthouse and officially tied the knot. Only Gunnarson was there to witness it, and we knew it must be kept a secret. But we nonetheless felt absolutely happy... even if Cricket would have to go home once her father came back; it was the only way to ensure we wouldn't draw his suspicion.
That cave trip brought about one of our craziest adventures however... but that's another story...
