Literary Mosaic No.6
Empire
The two men met in the spot they always did. Sneaking out from behind the shadows, one of them came up to the other. "You're late," said the first man. "I was held up," said the other, "you don't know how hard it is to get here." "Do you have the goods?" "Indeed I do," and he handed the man a box. The man opened it. Inside were a lot of little packets. "Good to know you came through."
Suddenly, out of nowhere, someone shouted, "Hold it right there! This is the police!" "Holy... how did they get here?!" "Don't ask questions, just RUN!!"
The two ran for it, but there were police everywhere. That didn't daunt them, though. They kept running...
BANG! BANG!
Two shots rang out, and then the two men fell... dead.
Gunnarson was sitting in his chair reading a book. "Ah, The Mysterious Affair at Styles. Hastings is indeed a good writer..."

It was 1946 now. The war was over and Gunnarson had much less on his mind now that there was no war to worry about. He had more free time for things like reading, and enjoyed reading up on the adventures of Poirot.
But elsewhere, all was not right.
In a dark alley, a car suddenly pulled up inside it. A door opened, and a giant sack was flung out of it. Just as quickly, the car went full reverse and pulled out, disappearing into the night.
It was not until hours later when someone found the sack.
"That's odd; what's this doing here?" The man who found it said. When he opened it, he was alarmed. "Good Lord!!"
There, inside was a man's body; with a bullet hole in the forehead, and several stabs to the chest.
The man was so terrified, he ran out of the alley.
......
"A yes, a great read. I wonder how they are doing now?" Gunnarson thought to himself.

Just then, someone knocked on his door. Gunnarson went to open it; standing there was Gent. "Ah, my dear Gent, what brings you here?" "Bad news I'm afraid, there's been a murder, and the police are stumped - we can only turn to you."

"Of course, Gent, be right over."
Gunnarson was halfway to the door when a bullet shattered the window and entered the wall a foot from his head.

"What the-!" "Holy cow," cried Gent, "Gunnarson, are you all right?!"

"I'm fine, I'm fine. Blimey, have the mob returned already?" A shocked Gunnarson asked.
"No, they've been silent for years" Gent informed.
"Well, whoever it was, seems they want me dead." Gunnarson observed.

"Well, no use worrying, I'll get it repaired in due course. Now, take me to the body!"
In the alley, policemen had blocked off the scene.

"I'm afraid there is not much Gunnarson; the lack of evidence seems to indicate the body was merely dumped here so literally... this is all there is to look at" Gent informed Gunnarson as he lead him to the sack.

Gunnarson sighed. "And I've definitely learned that I need evidence, I don't want to be dragged to court again," he quipped.

"Well, have at it Gunnarson" Gent said, gesturing to the bag.
Carefully, Gunnarson opened the bag and looked at the body. A bullet hole in the foreheard, and many knife stabs to the chest"
"I... don't get it?" A shocked Gunnarson said.
"Don't get what?" Gent asked; it was not like Gunnarson to get stumped.

"Why would this man have been stabbed and shot? Either one would have sufficed."

Then, Gunnarson put his nose into the bag... a risky move, but surprisingly helpful.
"Gent, I smell... potatoes?" Gunnarson said in confusion.

"Huh?" said Gent. He picked up the bag and sniffed. "Huh, you're right."

"That must be what this was... a potato sack. Gent, perhaps looking into some sort of food warehouse would be a good idea... if I am not mistaken, this sack could only have come from a place where they needed to store large quantities of potatoes" Gunnarson concluded.

"Is there a marking on the bag that could narrow it down?"
Gent looked. "It's from Albright Spud farm. Seven food warehouses serving 38 stores would have this brand of potato. And that's assuming the body was placed in the bag near where the murderer got it!"
"That doesn't narrow it down much... but this does!"

And Gunnarson pointed to another mark on the bag. "What's that?" asked Gent.

"I think it might be the name of a store... Schmitt's?" Gunnarson asked, confused.

"It looks like it, Schmitt's is a popular store in London where you can buy all sorts of vegetables."

"I think there are only 2 or 3 locations; it should be a good start to this case" Gunnarson suggested to Gent.

"Right then, let's get on it!"
So Gunnarson and Gent went to the first Schmitt's store.
