"...Scotland Yard."
"Right then."
Gent arrived at Scotland Yard and went inside to find one man he knew would help him find Gunnarson.

(I'm tempted to use stein, but he really needs his own series to shine. So, let's introduce a new character)
Heading into one detective's office, he called for his attention.
"Detective Matthews? You have a real knack for finding missing people, so I need you help. It's Gunnarson; all I know is that he's in Scotland, so here's what I want you to do..."

And Gent explained, telling him everything he knew.
"Right. I'll have him or his location to you by 8:00 tonight."
"What?! But that's impossible!"
"It's not impossible, my good sir. You have my word on it - 8:00 tonight."
Gent left, wondering how Matthews would be able to figure out everything in time.
Meanwhile, Gunnarson and Hartley...

Were across the street from the hotel. Hartley had his service revolver out; he was cleaning out the barrel to make sure it was good.
"Put that thing away, Hartley! Yes, I have mine too, but we can only use them as a last resort!" Gunnarson whispered to him.
"Oh; sorry. Anyway, what's the plan?" Hartley asked.
"Well first, we need to..."

get some rooms. You go in first and take a room for, say a week. I'll come in a little later just in case and get myself a room."
"Okay," said Hartley, and he walked inside the hotel.

He went up to the concierge desk and asked for a room to spend the night.
"Sir but what about luggage? Staying a week and no luggage?" The concierge asked
"Oh, sorry, my house burned down while I was at work yesterday. Lost everything except my money in the bank. I was going to buy some new clothes but I'm not off until tomorrow" Hartley said, quicky spinning a story.
"Understandable. Now then, here's your key sir. Fourth floor, room 402" the man said.
"Thank you" And Hartley went upstairs.
Half and hour later, Gunnarson came in.
"Can I help you sir?" The concierge asked.

"Yes, I'd like to take room for a week."
"Have any luggage?"
"Nope, I prefer to travel light."
"Okay. Interesting thing is, another guy came in 'bout half an hour before you. Said his burned down..."
"Oh, I am shocked! Disclosing information about other guests behind their back! I should report you!" said Gunnarson sternly.
"So you should," said the man. "One time I... never mind, I'll just bring you to your room."

(Why was it funny?)
Gunnarson was escorted up a couple flights of stairs.
"All right, here you are sir, third floor, room 305" the concierge said, showing him where it was and handing Gunnarson the key.
"I need to figure out which room Hartley ended up in... of course, knocking on all the doors is bound to get the Black Scorpion suspicious... all right, what to do..." Gunnarson thought.

(It just was, you know. "Oh, I'm not carrying luggage because my house burned down." ) He decided to wait till dinner (this hotel served dinner) and he would see Hartley there and pretend to casually meet him.

In the restaurant, Hartley went down, and deciding that it would be best to not draw attention to himself, went to the bar area of the restaurant.
"Ok, now if I were Gunnarson, what would I do..." Hartley thought to himself as he casually looked around.

A few moments later, Gunnarson himself walked in and looked around for Hartley. Seeing him at the bar, he walked over and sat down next to him. He ordered a drink and then said to Hartley, "Most drinks here are not half good... this one seems to be a rare exception."
Hartley caught on. "Indeed, some of the best I've tasted in a while. You come here often?"

"My first time staying here. Yourself?" Gunnarson asked.
"Same" Hartley replied. Then, once sure no one was listening, Hartley whispered "anything so far?"

"Not yet. What room are you in?"
Hartley was about to reply when the two were rudely interrupted.

"Pardon me sirs, anything to eat tonight?" the barman asked.
"Still making my decision" Hartley replied.
"Same" Gunnarson added as the waiter left.
"You were saying?" Gunnarson asked.

He could get no further, for suddenly a fight erupted in another corner of the room, a drink narrowly missed Gunnarson head.
"YOU PIG! YOU RIPPED ME OFF!" cried one of the men.
"I DID NOT! YOU BOUGHT THAT WATCH FOR WHAT IT WAS WORTH!"

They began exchanging blows, forcing others to try and intervene. Gunnarson and Hartley, with no choice, were forced to move down a distance.
"Anyway, I'm in 402" Hartley said to Gunnarson

"All right, so what do we do now?" Hartley asked.
"See that table over there, with the dozen or so sitting together? The 8 I told you about are there among them" Gunnarson explained.
"My goodness; you sure?" Hartley asked.
"Of course, I could tell by the..."

"Well, they are here now, and they apparently plan to meet at the coal mine in two days; what exactly are we supposed to do?" Hartley asked.
"I have it figured out. Now that we are in the hotel the next step is..."
