"...going to center of the city. There is a statue with a man riding a donkey with a broom in his hand. Underneath the statue you should find a pen and paper. Take it and write, 'I AM MOP' and burn it."

"What?" A confused Hartley asked.

"I know it sounds crazy," said Gunnarson, "but believe me, there's a method to my madness. Please do it quickly, it is very urgent." And he rang off.
Hartly looked at his phone for a bit before he hung up. "Okay..."

He grabbed a pencil and paper, and then took his hat and coat before heading out.
"Roger! I'm heading out for a bit! I shouldn't be gone long!" He called out.
"All right; see you soon!" Roger replied.
Getting to the statue, Hartley wrote the message on the paper, and using his lighter, burned it. He stood there for 10 minutes, and nothing happened.
"Gunnarson, if this is your idea of a joke I swear..." Hartley grumbled.

Suddenly he remembered. "Wait, he said there was a pen and paper under the statue waiting there! Silly me. Wait... under the statue?!"
Sure enough, in a small crevice at the bottom of the statue he found a pen and paper. He took it out and wrote "I AM MOP" on it, and then burned it. As he watched the paper burn, a message suddenly appeared on it.
"Oh my goodness," he said, "this is a piece of parchment, not paper!"

"Ok, so he said to take down the message" Hartley reminded himself. Once the fire stopped burning, he read what had appeared before him.

"Huh, interesting," he said. "It makes no sense to me, but I'm sure it's a different story for Gunnarson," and he wrote down the sentence...

"GWD MREDLAKA FOLCURM WADYA GENGER NOIN" was what Hartley read. "Oh, I get it; it must be coded. Ok, so now I just have to... wait, darn it, Gunnarson didn't tell me what to do next! Ok, calm down, just think this through. What would Gunnarson want me to do" Hartley thought.

Gunnarson, half-dead and still hiding in the coal mine, was trying to think of a way to get out of this mess...
"At least I got my old service piece... Why am I always getting stuck in these messes anyway... Hope Gent's doing fine..." contemplated Gunnarson

But for right now, Gunnarson had his own issues to deal with. The way he saw it, there were two options.
"I can get out of here... I mean, no one is outside, and I was able to find that field office with the working telephone. Though on the other hand, I need to figure out what is going on here. I mean, from this paper alone, I already know that..."

"..:something much more dangerous and sinister is going on here..."
Gunnarson had to make up his mind on what to do, and fast.

Reasoning that taking on an unknown force alone was suicide, he decided he needed to make a break for it; after all he was a detective, not a soldier, there was no way he could take on alone what was going on here.
(NOTE: Trying to return to "mystery novel" and away from "action-thriller" since we already had that in LM 3 )

And so Gunnarson climbed out of the coal mine, and when he was sure that no one was following him, he ran as fast as he could.
When he had run far enough, he stopped and thought over what he would have to do next.

Realizing he was on the outskirts of a town, he reasoned the best thing to do was head into town and ask for help. After all, he was lost and needed to figure out where the heck he was if Hartley was ever going to help him.
"I hope Hartley figured out what to do next... in hindsight I probably should have told him more" Gunnarson thought.

As it was, Hartley could not decide on what to do.
"Should I notify the police about this?" he wondered. "Or should I wait for further instructions from Gunnarson?"

He knew that he had the coded message for Gunnarson, but would it have been too much to know what to do with it?
Then, he decided. "Of course! I know what to do now! I'll..."

"Call up Gent!"
So he dialed the officer's number, but no one picked up.
"He's probably away right now. Oh well," thought Hartley.

Then, Hartley shook his head. "What the heck am I doing?! Gunnarson could be in serious trouble! I need to be more proactive! Wait, what was that one officer he was good friends with? Maybe he can offer me advice, they do talk a lot" Hartley concluded. Picking up the phone again, he dialed another number.
"Hello? Detective Stein? Yes, I need to talk to you about something..."

"Excuse me, may I have your name?"
"I think we've met before, my name is James Hartley, I'm a friend of Adolf Gunnarson."
"Oh yes! Hartley! I remembered you. What is it you want to talk to me about?"

"Gunnarson is in a heap of trouble. Apparently he's been kidnapped and taken to some coal mine in Northern Scotland. He gave me a coded note to write down but I just don't know what to do. I know you two talk a lot, so I was hoping you might have some ideas for this situation" Hartley said.
