Chapter I
Author's Note: What has been seen can not be unseen
The snow blew in powerful gusts over the Siberian Glacier. Seven figures, their faces obscured by the storm, trudged through the knee-deep snow with more than a little difficulty.
"I told you we should have turned back! My hands are too cold to create a portal now, Bronze Mage. I hope you're pleased with yourself." A female voice grumbled.
"Oh, shut up." Another female voice replied. "At least you're tall enough your knees don't get stuck in the snow."
"See, this is why Killerman and I have pants." A male voice bragged. "We don't wear your silly robes and dresses. We can go all we want and not trip over ourselves."
"Hivemind, get that body's ego under control or we'll kill it and go on without you." The Bronze Mage snapped. He paused, surveying his group. Vivian Bloodsphere and Orator were shaking in the kimonos they had gotten from their time in Japan, which did a horrible job of keeping out the cold. Hivemind was strutting on ahead in the body he'd picked up in a southern town, while Killerman was helping Honeybadger get unstuck from yet another snowdrift. Inferno was faring worst of all though. He had made the foolish decision to go "barbarian style", aka shirtless, on the next leg of their journey, figuring his fire powers would keep him warm, but the cold wind kept putting out the flames he conjured, and he was left shivering, desperately wrapping his arms around himself to keep the cold out.
Suddenly, Hivemind began dashing ahead to the top of the next ridge.
"He senses something!" Vivian shrieked, lifting her skirt and racing after in pursuit.
"Maybe it's some winter shrine for an Eastern Magei!" Orator gasped.
"Or maybe it's just another goddamn Yeti." Honeybadger countered, tripping over his robes again.
"Oh, for pity's sake." Orator's eyes glazed over. "Teleport Bronze Mage, Honeybadger, Vivian Bloodsphere, Killerman, Inferno, and Orator to the person or object Hivemind sensed!"
The group found themselves at the bottom of a ledge, where the snow was less thick. A form lay buried beneath the snow.
"I can see the magic power radiating from it!" Vivian yelled. "It's necromancy, specifically
mortuus deambulatio- pretty rare branch of magic, and definitely useful."
Orator lifted the snow off of the form, to reveal a young-looking Russian woman, probably in her late forties based on her magic aura, but she didn't look a day over thirty. She was naked, and frostbite was clearly setting in.
"Let's get her back to the base camp!" The Bronze Mage ordered.
"Look out!" Inferno yelled, right as a Siberian Husky leapt at his throat, blocked only by a honey blast from Honeybadger.
Over the ridge came about 20 men in thick woolen parkas, carrying special closed torches and spears, and with several more huskies surrounding them. They were chanting something and appeared very mad.
"What are they saying? I don't know that language." Bronze Mage asked.
Hivemind leapt at one of them, managing to touch the hooded face before getting speared and entering its body.
"They want her to die, because they think she's an evil witch. They left her out here to freeze to death. Her name is "Priori" or something to that effect."
"Vivian, Inferno, teleport her back to base camp, we'll deal with these guys." Bronze Mage ordered.
Five minutes of carnage later, the snow was stained red with the blood of the huskies and their owners, except a few Hivemind had claimed. Orator teleported the rest of the group back to the "base camp", located in a cave several miles south of there.
Priori had been treated with Vivian's healing magic and dressed in a black Apprentice Necromancy robe she had created. She was lying unconscious in a lush bed Vivian had summoned.
"She'll survive with no lasting harm. But she'll be out for a while. Hopefully when she wakes up we'll be able to learn something about her."
Bronze Mage nodded and got up to leave to another part of the cave, but after a quick glance back at Priori, something in his face seemed to soften. He instead grabbed a chair from the edge of the room and sat by the head of the bed, waiting and watching in silence for Priori to wake up.
