The role of a signalman is very important to Sir Topham Hatt's railway, because he sets the points and signals that allow trains to operate safely all over the island, and it is the engine's responsibility to follow the points and signals, but this accident showed everyone that even when both engine and signalman try their hardest to stay safe, sometimes things happen that no one has any control over.

Sir Topham Hatt prefers steam engines on his railway, but he also finds that diesels have their uses too; on Sodor there are two hardworking diesels named BoCo and Bear, who work right alongside the steam engines.

While this had caused plenty of arguments years before, all the engines work hard and are now great friends.

BoCo looks after goods on Edward's branch line, and Bear takes care of goods and passengers on the main line.

"Here," he said, "are Boris and Karloff."

Most of the steam engines took an immediate disliking to them, especially Duck; after their experience with Diesel, the steam engines on Sodor did not trust Class 08 diesels.

Boris and Karloff looked down upon steam engines.

"""Pah, you steam engines are nothing more than worthless hunks of junk. Is diesels are the future of the railway. We can do more than any steam engine any can, and we are certainly more daring" Boris boasted.

"It's an expression; in other words, what goes around comes around; they'll soon be taught a lesson" Edward explained to Percy.
