Wait, I'm confused; that's not what we set up; how could he crash into Gordon? We didn't even say he was there. And if he were here we'd at least set up Gordon's presence.

James couldn't see the improperly set up points until it was too late... he surged towards them at top speed.

James rode over the faulty points and tumbled down a small hill, landing on his side.

His driver and fireman jumped clear before the crash, and the last few trucks and brakevan didn't come off the rails, so the guard was not hurt either.

When he arrived at the scene, he was surprised to hear that "the points weren't set right; they were sort of in the middle, not going to the siding and not going to the line" as the driver put it.

Some time later, James came out of the works feeling much better, and workmen repaired the problematic points at the junction where the accident happened
