Grunge is one of the most influential music genres of the past 30 years. But other than the "big four", most people don't know anything about grunge. Which is why I made this list. Charting the entire history of grunge, from Green River all the way to Celebrity Skin, from Sonic Youth to Superunknown. Unlike most lists, this is not a subjective "top 50". Rather, the songs will be in roughly chronological order, and chosen to hit all the major points throughout grunge history. So, let us begin!

1) Green River- Swallow My Pride (1985)
This is where it all started. Released in 1985, Green River's Come On Down EP is widely regarded as the first true "grunge" record. Combining punk, hard rock, and sludge metal, this band was never successful outside of Seattle, but its influences are widespread, and its members (Jeff Ament, Mark Arm, Steve Turner, Alex Vincent, Stone Gossard, and Bruce Fairweather),went on to become members of bands like Mudhoney, Mother Love Bone, Temple Of The Dog, and Pearl Jam. This particular song is heavily plagarized from the Blue Oyster Cult song "This Ain't The Summer Of Love", but it is still among the band's best-known songs and the copycat nature doesn't deter it from being a good song.
