156. Third Eye Blind - “Semi-Charmed Life”
Five different versions of this classic were worked out before the band ended at the released version, and boy did it explode. With its earworm chorus and semi-rapped verses, this bright, bouncy anthem about crystal meth addiction remains the band’s biggest song.

155. The Offspring - “Self Esteem”
Being stuck in a bad relationship and unable to stick up for yourself sucks, and no band illustrated that feeling better than The Offspring. The second single from Smash was a worldwide hit, with a punky ‘90s alt style and dejected lyrics packing quite a wallop in the charts.

154. Nirvana - “In Bloom”
The final single from Nevermind is simple yet effective, with quiet verses, loud choruses, and an unforgettable riff. One of the band’s most famous songs, it’s an ode to all the jocks that ended up liking the nerdier alt scene, and, ironically, millions of fans do indeed “like to sing along” to this one.

153. Green Day - “When I Come Around”
Green Day’s career, filled with varying degrees of success, seems to usually hit a highpoint with several great songs and then dip back down again, and man was that the case with their third album Dookie. Three songs went straight to number one from that album, including this song, their biggest single until “Good Riddance” and American Idiot ushered in new highpoints.

152. Hole - “Violet”
A woman’s life can so often be dominated by controlling men, and Courtney Love perfectly sums this up in “Violet”. Inspired by her relationship with Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan, it’s an aggressive rage-filled track that many critics hailed as one of the band’s best songs.

151. Collective Soul - “December”
Collective Soul’s career exploded far quicker than they ever anticipated, and this led to frustrations with their manager. “December” lays everything out on the table and became another big hit for the group.

150. Fountains of Wayne - “Stacy’s Mom”
Fountains of Wayne have certainly released more songs beyond this one, but come on, how many of them can you full-on belt fully knowing every word? There’s such an incredible catchiness in this silly song about a schoolboy’s crush, it’s impossible to hate. No wonder it’s their biggest hit.

149. Red Hot Chili Peppers - “Scar Tissue”
16 weeks topping the Modern Rock Tracks chart, 10 weeks topping the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, and peaking at number 9 on the Hot 100 itself, this was the first single from Californication and boy did it prove the Chili Peppers had gas left in the tank. It ushered John Frusciante back into the band, broke records, and won a fricking Grammy. Goddamn.

Dave Grohl almost destroyed his voice recording this song, with its memorable lyrics and sing-along qualities. It quickly became one of their most popular anthems, topped charts, and won an award from Kerrang! magazine.

147. U2 - “One”
The recording sessions for Achtung Baby did not go as planned initially, with the band nearly breaking up before they struck gold with this passionate song about disunity. Inspired both by their tensions as a group and the German reunification, it was released as a charity single benefitting AIDS research, and now reigns as one of the group’s most iconic songs.

146. Tool - “Forty Six & 2”
Beyond the progressive nature of their music, Tool have always been interested in the wild and spiritual, and this iconic track from Ænima is one of the purest examples of this. Inspired by the Jungian concept of the “shadow” and an out-there belief that humans will evolve two more chromosomes, the band transforms it into a banger celebrating our mutual evolutions in understanding and being the purest forms of ourselves. No wonder it still garners attention and radio play today.

145. Manic Street Preachers - “If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next”
UK band Manic Street Preachers missed the US completely as they dominated their home country. In fact, this is their only song to chart in North America — in Canada. Inspired by the Spanish Civil War, this is an antifascist anthem about learning from history and fighting for what’s right, and also took a Guiness World Record for longest #1 song title uninterrupted by brackets.

144. Rage Against the Machine - “Bulls on Parade”
Never has political activism been so damn catchy. Lyrically a tirade against the aggressive tactics of the US military, it’s also a juggernaut sonically, Tom Morello bringing one of his greatest riffs and an iconic vinyl scratch guitar solo.

143. Fall Out Boy - “Sugar, We’re Goin Down”
Watching this song charting in the Hot 100 must’ve been wild, as its success with downloads versus radio airplay lead it inconsistent peaks and a slides. The first Fall Out Boy single to reach the Top 10, it remains their most well-known song, a fun punky anthem that you can’t escape on alt radio even today.

The closing track to Meteora is a haunting song about abuse and its affects, and features one of Chester Bennington’s greatest vocal performances. A song about yearning for someone who can’t be there with you right in the moment, “Wish You Were Here” was a huge success for Incubus, becoming one of their biggest hits. Unfortunately their original music video had to be scrapped due to the events of 9/11, but the second incarnation got massive rotation on MTV, propelling its success.

140. Temple of the Dog - “Hunger Strike”
Temple of the Dog started out as a tribute to Andrew Wood, but nowadays can be thought of as Pearl Jam + Chris Cornell. Indeed, the big single from the album was a duet between Chris and Eddie Vedder, who put such a unique stamp on it together that it’s no wonder it’s become such a beloved track. The group may have only done one record together, but their legacy lives on.

139. Television - “Marquee Moon”
Few iconic alt classics cross the ten minute mark in length, but Television’s iconic 1977 album title track does. A minor hit in the UK, its legacy has grown with time, now considered a classic art punk song with almost progressive leanings that make it a one of a kind.
