101. Nile - โAnnihilation of the Wickedโ
Karl Sandersโs Nile have always been conceptually based around the mythos of ancient Egypt, and the bandโs complex yet brutal death metal approach makes for some killer, dark thematics. The title track to the bandโs fourth album is an 8 minute epic example of their power and prowess.

100. Black Sabbath - โHeaven and Hellโ
Weโve reached the Top 100! As we head into the second half of heavy metal greatness, we return to the British masterminds that spawned the genre, to find that their lead singer has departed them. And then a flash of light, and a new vocalist has entered the stage! With Ronnie James Dio at the mic, Black Sabbath dropped a classic record that helped redefine their power. The title track is one of their greatest songs overall.

99. Judas Priest - โVictim of Changesโ
If Black Sabbath created metal, Judas Priest defined the new genreโs boundaries. โVictim of Changesโ wasnโt supposed to open Sad Wings of Destiny, but a pressing mistake changed the course of history. This seven minute rocker instantly hooked listeners, and the (sorta) live version from Unleashed in the East showed the songโs full potential unveiled.

98. Death - โZombie Ritualโ
Possessed may have beaten Death by two years in claiming the title of โfirst death metal albumโ, but Chuck Schuldiner created the genreโs framework with Scream Bloody Gore. The second track was the one that truly gave the world a taste of this new genre and its potential. While the lyrics are gorier than Death would do in future, thereโs no denying the staying power and influence early Death has retained in metal history.

97. Rainbow - โKill the Kingโ
Long Live Rock โnโ Roll was Rainbowโs last record with Dio as the frontman, and the last really โmetalโ album the band would do. This hard hitting tune would become one of the most important songs in the development of speed metal.

96. Ozzy Osbourne - โOver the Mountainโ
The second solo album from the former Black Sabbath singer proved that the success of his first record hadnโt been a fluke. From the very first track, Randy Rhoads was kicking up a storm in the form of yet another goddamn masterful riff. The fact that it would be Ozzyโs final album with the guitarist is proof that life isnโt fair, but Randy lives on through the terrific music he played while on loan to earth.

95. Sepultura - โRefuse/Resistโ
As the band began to mature, Sepultura turned their eyes towards injustices in the world, and wrote a scorching protest song supporting rioters against dictatorships. It opened their Chaos A.D. album and has become one of the bandโs most popular songs.

94. Slayer - โSouth of Heavenโ
Reign in Blood was just an aggressive, turbocharged record that Slayer could tell that topping it would be no mean feat. Therefore they made the conscious effort to slow down. The result was South of Heaven, and the title track is a brooding, atmospheric metal classic.

93. Rammstein - โSonneโ
Rammstein followed up their breakthrough Sehnsucht with Mutter, a juggernaut album filled to the brim with classics and fan favorites. Originally written as a wrestler entrance, this blockbuster metal song became one of the bandโs most memorable songs, with a riff thatโs louder than hell.

92. Iron Maiden - โRun to the Hillsโ
The first single released from Maidenโs transcendent The Number of the Beast, this was the introduction many of the bandโs fans had to the insane pipes of new frontman Bruce Dickinson. Written about the plight of the Native Americans from two perspectives, it helped launch the album into the annals of history and remains one of the bandโs immortal concert staples.

91. Alice in Chains - โThem Bonesโ
What a hell of a way to open an album. A skull crushing riff and Layne Staleyโs tortured screams usher in a terrifically heavy, moody song about life and death. Never mind the fact that they slipped a 7/8 riff right past you!

90. Blind Guardian - โMirror, Mirrorโ
Nightfall in Middle-Earth is one of Blind Guardianโs most beloved album, and the recordโs single is one of their most iconic songs. A speedy, power metal anthem, itโs a terrific example of the genre.

89. Saxon - โPrincess of the Nightโ
Saxon were always the working manโs NWOBHM band, keeping their music and lyrics simple but effective. The opening track to their Denim and Leather album was an ode to a steam locomotive that became one of their most beloved songs.

88. Cannibal Corpse - โHammer Smashed Faceโ
For many people, Cannibal Corpseโs most famous song is also the definitive death metal recording. It sums up for outsiders what they expect from the genre: fucked-up lyrics about gore, wild instrumentation, and unlistenable vocals. And yet itโs become popular for the very reason that itโs wildly different from โnormalโ music. Of course an appearance in Ace Ventura didnโt hurt either.

87. Burzum - โJesu dรธdโ
Newcomers to black metal, tread lightly with Burzum. Itโs the solo outfit of Varg Vikernes, the murderer of Mayhem guitarist Euronymous and one of the genreโs most infamous Nazis. As shitty as he is as a person, however, one cannot deny the influence he has had on black metal (for better or worse), and his knack for creating an atmosphere on tracks like this one is unmatchable.

86. Marilyn Manson - โThe Beautiful Peopleโ
Marilyn Manson took the industrial blueprint of Nine Inch Nails and made it rock even fucking harder. With Antichrist Superstar, he tore conservative America a new one, and โThe Beautiful Peopleโ became a marching anthem for a society breaking out of the shadows of the archaic.

85. Dark Angel - โMerciless Deathโ
Originally released on their debut We Have Arrived, Dark Angel re-recorded โMerciless Deathโ for their sophomore record Darkness Descends. Itโs this version that has become iconic, a thrash tour-de-force that slaughtered all in its wake.

84. Metallica - โFade to Blackโ
Ride the Lightning was a bit more experimental than Metallicaโs debut, giving the band the freedom to explore new sounds and expand their palette. Was โFade to Blackโ the first metal ballad? No, but it radically redefined the way future bands would approach the framework. It was proof that metal canโt always be placed in a box; the shades different bands use is what makes the art form what it is.

83. Type O Negative - โBlack No. 1 (Little Miss Scare-All)โ
When it comes to gothic metal, Type O Negative had the market cornered. This expansive, 11 minute epic about a goth girl and her hair coloring (and Peter Steele wanting to fuck her) helped propel the Bloody Kisses album to the mainstream consciousness, and remains the bandโs signature song.

82. Candlemass - โSolitudeโ
Black Sabbath aside, no band did more for doom metal than Candlemass with their debut album Epicus Doomicus Metallicus. The opener โSolitudeโ remains their most famous song, a staple of all their live sets and one of the genreโs most iconic tracks.
