160. Emperor - “Ye Entrancemperium”
Emperor was pushing the boundaries of black metal with their first record, and on their second they tightened up, moved into heavier, faster, and more classically-inspired music. Subsequently the resulting Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk is widely regarded as one of the greatest black metal albums ever. This song nabbed a riff from contemporaries Mayhem for a deadly assault on the ears.

After blowing the whole budget on cocaine, Ministry still managed to record an industrial masterpiece in the form of Psalm 69: The Way to Succeed and the Way to Suck Eggs. Even crazier is that radios actually played this shit. Ding a ding a dang dang ding dong.

157. Atheist - “Piece of Time”
Recorded in ‘88 but only released two years later, Atheist’s debut is a masterpiece of technical death metal. The title track is a scorching state of the art blaster and one of the genre’s greatest tracks.

156. Helloween - “Halloween”
Helloween’s Keeper of the Seven Keys: Part I was their first to feature vocalist Michael Kiske, and his incredible range helped elevate the group to new heights. As one of the most important power metal records recorded, it created a lot of the formulas that feature artists would carry forward. Within its grooves it held a thirteen minute epic that showed the band’s creativity and musical prowess on full display.

155. Sepultura - “Roots Bloody Roots”
Sepultura was changing, and on their last album with original vocalist and rhythm guitarist Max Cavalera, they decided to embrace the indigenous culture of their native Brazil. To do this, they met with the Xavante tribe and recorded music together. The resulting Roots album became one of the pioneering nu metal records, and the title track remains one of their best-known songs.

152. Type O Negative - “Christian Woman”
This was the song Type O Negative opened their third album with. Instantly a gothic blend of doom guitars, synths, and Peter Steele’s seductive voice echo out of the speakers. How could you not fall in love with it? Whether it’s the four minute edit or the full, three act, nine minute album version, this was a clear monster and it’s no wonder it helped propel the band into the mainstream spotlight.

151. Dokken - “Kiss of Death”
Dokken were more than your average hair band. With guitar god George Lynch’s killer riffs and shred skill, they knew how to rock harder than their contemporaries. This songs features one of those trademark riffs and remains one of their ultimate fan favorites.

150. Iron Maiden - “Aces High”
Long before he became an actual pilot, Bruce Dickinson was soaring high with his “air raid siren” voice during Maiden’s ‘80s heyday. His bandmate Steve Harris, though, was the actual author of their Battle of Britain tribute, a fiery blast-on-all-cylinders that has become their most iconic concert opener.

149. Iced Earth - “Dante’s Inferno”
Before he became better known for storming the Capitol building, Jon Schaffer was a super talented rhythm guitarist how built a career around palm muting. This song comes from Iced Earth’s third album, their first with their iconic vocalist Matt Barlow. It’s a sixteen minute journey through Hell that also became a cornerstone on their famous Alive in Athens live LP.

148. Drowning Pool - “Bodies”
Drowning Pool erupted onto the national scene with this single hit, in spite of the song being banned on radios post-9/11. Their lead singer Dave Williams would die on the tour for its parent album Sinner, but what a legacy he’d just left behind him.

147. Rammstein - “Engel”
The lead single from Rammstein’s sophomore album Sehnsucht, it was one of the songs that helped propel them to stardom. With a heavy, robotic riff and heavy usage of keyboards, it was a killer industrial dance metal piece that has long remained a setlist staple.

146. Symphony X - “The Divine Wings of Tragedy”
Symphony X’s third album is the one that launched them into the metal world, and the title track remains one of the most beloved progressive epics in the genre. Inspired by Paradise Lost and filled with several unique sections, angelic choirs, multiple time signature changes, and rooted by Gustav Holst’s “Mars, the Bringer of War”, it’s a perfect example of the band showing off their skills without falling into wankery.

145. Ozzy Osbourne - “No More Tears”

143. Judas Priest - “The Hellion” / “Electric Eye”
Priest kicked off their seminal Screaming for Vengeance with a double shot of heavy metal espresso. “The Hellion” is a short multi-tracked guitar instrumental masterpiece, and “Electric Eye” is a laser-focused rocker and one of the band’s best anthems. You just can’t play one with the other.

142. Diamond Head - “The Prince”
Diamond Head never made it big, but their influence on Metallica and Megadeth is legendary. Check the riff to “The Prince” (a song Metallica would famously cover). It spelled out a killer blueprint for early Metallica to invigorate the thrash scene, and the dual guitar instrumental would be nicked by Megadeth during the ‘90s.
