181. Machine Head - โDavidianโ
The opening song on Machine Headโs first album, โDavidianโ instantly showed off Rob Flynnโs brand of groove metal in a raging rocker inspired by the Waco siege.

180. Morbid Angel - โGod of Emptinessโ
Morbid Angelโs third album, Covenant, arrived at a perfect time for their major label record company. It marked a zenith in death metal popularity and offered up tracks that MTV latched onto, like this heavy album closer, which even appeared on Beavis and Butthead.

179. Acid Bath - โToubabo Koomiโ
Acid Bath were an epitome of underground metal. Hailing from Louisiana, their swampy sound helped craft the genre of sludge metal, and their obsession with psychopathic terror made them one of the creepiest groups in the genre. This track is a standout from their debut, and the only one to get a music video before their untimely break up.

178. Black Sabbath - โSweet Leafโ
Stoner metal starts here. Black Sabbath opened their third record with an open love letter to weed (complete with Tony Iommiโs immortal cough post-bong inhalation), and paved the way that bands like Sleep and Electric Wizard would follow later on.

177. Death - โSpirit Crusherโ
Chuck Schuldiner was never okay with sitting still, constantly pushing boundaries within the death metal genre after practically founding it. By the late โ90s he was ready to leave the genre behind altogether and pursue his new project Control Denied, but managed to put one last great Death album together before calling it quits. Long after his death from brain cancer, it remains a beautiful final statement to the world from one of the most important bands in the genre. This song is a highlight of the album, centered by Chuckโs emotive vocals and some of his greatest piercing shrieks ever.

176. Slayer - โHell Awaitsโ
After their debut became Metal Bladeโs best selling record, Slayer went back to the studio for a heavier, more evil, and more progressive sophomore record. The result was Hell Awaits, and the title track remains a classic of heavy metal aggression.

175. Papa Roach - โLast Resortโ
Written about a friend of the band, โLast Resortโ documents a mental health spiral with thoughts of suicide. It spoke to people, helping the nu metal band to break through into the mainstream with one of the genreโs most killer riffs.

174. Metallica - โSeek & Destroyโ
Metallicaโs debut Kill โEm All was like a gauntlet about to be dropped on the virgin genre of thrash metal, and โSeek & Destroyโ, with its multitude of twisting riffs, was a call to arms to headbangers everywhere. The calm before the storm.

173. Manowar - โHail and Killโ
With their chant of โDeath to false metal!โ, Manowar became the cheesiest of the cheesy in their quest for glory. But from their nonsensical odes to valiance they helped forge the irons that power metal would be spawned from, with classic bangers like this track from the sixth album, Kings of Metal.

172. Exciter - โHeavy Metal Maniacโ
Speed metal never did have any well-defined boundaries, usually falling somewhere between thrash and traditional heavy metal, but Exciterโs debut is among the best examples of the genre. Like a mixture between early Maiden and Motรถrhead cranked up to 11, they ripped up the stage with anthemic scorchers like the iconic title track.

170. Bruce Dickinson - โAccident of Birthโ
Bruce was punting around with a variety of styles when he left Maiden, but it was his partnership with guitarist and producer Roy Z that ignited a heavy metal spark set to explode. With another Maiden refugee in two in the form of Adrian Smith, the group united to craft a kickass heavy metal album called Accident of Birth. No one had heard anything like it, and it gave the mothership band such a run for their money that many now consider it to be as good if not better than Maidenโs own material. Welcome home.

169. Savatage - โGutter Balletโ
With their fifth album, Savatage was transitioning away from pure heavy metal into a new enticing form with more progressive structures, conceptual leanings, and a huge dose of symphonic elements, which can all be heard on this piano-driven title track. It would be the blueprint the band would fully embrace on later albums and would set the stage for the future Trans-Siberian Orchestra.

168. Bathory - โOne Rode to Asa Bayโ
Like Chuck Schuldiner and death metal, Quorthon was unwilling to sit comfortably in the constrains of the black metal genre heโd helped cultivate. By the fifth Bathory album Hammerheart, he was crafting masterpieces like this nine minute epic of the christianization of Sweden, which would become the first in a line of Viking metal classics.

167. Yngwie Malmsteen - โBlack Starโ
The godfather of the shredders, Yngwie was tearing up the โ80s guitar scene like no one else. His smooth scaling of notes was unheard of, and his mastery can be fully heard in this instrumental, his signature song.

166. King Diamond - โWelcome Homeโ
King had constructed a runaway classic in Abigail, and he followed it up with another concept album called โThemโ. The opening track spelled everything out: this was going to be a cheesy ride, but a fun one too. As soon as he screams โGrandma!โ into the mic, itโs over. Youโre hooked.

165. Cynic - โVeil of Mayaโ
Cynic had no interest in being the most brutal death metal band on the scene. Instead, they took a more progressive and experimental path, unifying the genre with jazz influence for a truly unique experience. The opening track on their debut is a beautiful example of their wonderfully unique approach to extreme metal.
