The New Railway Series No.44 Derek The ‘Teething Trouble’ Diesel By Diesel 11 Forward DEAR FRIENDS,
Bill and Ben have been quite overworked. The Fat Controller has realized this, and thus bought another engine. Unfortunately, he came with problems… But I should not say more, so as not to spoil the stories.

One Good Turn Based on the story by Britt Allcroft and David Mitton BILL and Ben are kept busy at the China Clay Works pushing and pulling trucks all day long. Though they work hard, they sometimes play tricks on other engines, and even the workmen. This sometimes gets them into trouble. One day, the Fat Controller came to see the two engines. “Extra goods have arrived, so I need you two to work in the Yard with Edward and BoCo.” “Yes, Sir,” said the Twins, and puffed away on their important mission.
BoCo was busy shunted trucks when he heard two familiar whistles. “Oh, boy,” he though, “here comes trouble.” “Hello, BoCo,” said Ben. “The Fat Controller told us that the work is too hard for you, so we’re to take over.” “I know your tricks,” laughed BoCo, “Just get to work.”
The Twins got busy, and soon were puffing backwards and forwards to get the job done. At the end of the day, all the work was done. The Twins now were allowed to use the turntable for the very first time. Bill went first, “This is fun,” he said. Just then, a foreman stopped the turntable. “Sorry,” he said, “but we must make room for the other engines.” Bill didn’t want to get off, but he had no choice. Unbeknownst to him, the foreman had accidently stopped the table on the wrong track. Bill was know headed towards Ben! With a bump, the two engines stopped. “This is your fault,” said Ben, “I was here first.” “But you’re in my way, so you’ll have to back up,” said Bill. “I won’t!” “You will.” “I won’t!” “You will!” The Yard Manager came up. “Stop arguing,” he said. Bill and Ben were still angry.
Next morning, Bill rolled up to BoCo. “That Ben, he was in the way. He should’ve moved. It’s his fault!” “The way I heard it,” said BoCo, “you were both to blame.” “Then you must’ve heard it all wrong!” said Ben.
The Twins kept bad-mouthing each other until everyone was sick and tired of it. “All this grumbling brings a bad atmosphere into the Yard,” he said, “Something must be done!” “Exactly,” said BoCo, “which is why I have a plan.” And he whispered something to Edward. His driver and fireman told the Fat Controller, who agreed. “I’ll make the arrangements,” he said.
That afternoon, he spoke to Bill and Ben. “BoCo has to pull a special train,” he said, “but his regular goods need pulling too. I want you two to pull it for him.” “But – but –“ spluttered the Twins. “Good. I knew I could count on you!” “I’ll pull the darn train myself,” growled Ben. “Go right ahead!” grouched Bill. Ben tried to pull it, but it wouldn’t budge. “Well, can’t you pull it?” laughed Bill. Then, the Twins laughed! “Come on, Ben, let’s do it together,” said Bill. “Thanks!” said Ben. It was great to be helping each other again. It was even better to be friends again.

Double Teething Troubles Based on the story by Britt Allcroft and David Mitton
THE work at the China Clay became a lot harder, and more help was needed. The Fat Controller kindly let BoCo come and help, but he knew that they would need a permanent engine to work there. “A diesel is all that’s available,” he told them, “and I would like you to welcome him without tricks or trouble.” “Yes, sir,” said the Twins doubtfully.
A few days later, the diesel started making his way to the China Clay Works. He had just been unloaded by ship from the Other Railway, and did not know much of Sodor yet. He came to Gordon’s Hill. “Oh, bother,” he said, “This is a climb!” He struggled up, and just as he was halfway up, he suddenly stopped as black smoke billowed from his engine. “That’s torn it!” he grumbled. BoCo came and helped him to the Works. It would be a few days before he could help at the China Clay Works.
The news soon spread. That afternoon, Bill came up looking glum. “What’s the matter?” asked Ben. “It’s the new diesel. He’s got a toothache!” “Oh, dear!” said Ben. BoCo rolled up. “He hasn’t got a toothache,” he said, “he’s got teething troubles. That means that he is new and has some problems. In his case it’s his cooling system.”
The next day, the Twins were working when they heard an unfamiliar horn. “It must be the new diesel,” said Bill, and sure enough, it was. “Hello,” said the diesel. “Nice to meet you. Get right to work, I suppose? Pull these trucks? You take the front, and I’ll take the back. What fun!” Bill and Ben were speechless!
The three engines started the journey to the Docks. On the way, the track started to climb. “Oh bother,” said the diesel, “I think I’m overheating again!” And he did! The drivers considered. “Bill, Ben, do you think that you can take the cars and the diesel to the Docks?” “We’ll give it a jolly good try!” The two engines started, and slowly but surely, the train got underway. They finally reached the Docks, and the diesel was hauled off to the Works. Bill and Ben meanwhile, went off to the sheds and fell happily to sleep.

Heroes Based on the story by Britt Allcroft and David Mitton
WITH the diesel away, Bill and Ben had to work harder than ever. It was a relief to them when the Fat Controller sent for them. “I need some help at the Yard,” he said. “Please sort out the trucks.” Bill and Ben were delighted.
They found Gordon in a siding. “Hello, lazybones,” teased Ben, “I still say that we should’ve gotten rid of you!” “Humph,” said Gordon, “Just get these cars in order so you can fetch my coaches later.” “Sure thing,” giggled Bill.
The Twins set to work. “Let us help,” said the cars, “We can tell you just how to put things.” “Thank you,” said the Twins. “Cars respect us,” they thought. That evening, the Yard was in turmoil. The trucks had told Bill and Ben to put them in all the wrong places, and when everything was finally sorted out, Gordon was immensely late. Bill shunted the coaches into place at last, and Gordon finally started. The Fat Controller chastised the Twins next morning, and sent them back to the China Clay Works.
As the two engines started work again, they heard a slight noise. “I’ve never heard that kind of noise before,” said Bill. “I have,” said his driver, “Sounds like a rock slide to me.” Sure enough, they heard a warning. “Danger! Clear the Clay Works!” Bill and Ben shunted empty cars up so that the workmen could get in. Ben had already left, and Bill was just about to, when he heard a “Help! Wait for me!” A workman had been left behind! The man raced over and scrambled aboard, and Bill started quickly. They were just in time.
**** The Twins looked at the destroyed Clay Pits in dismay. “Oh dear,” they thought. “I hope the Fat Controller understands that it wasn’t our fault.” And indeed he did. Next morning he came to see them and the workmen. “Bill and Ben,” he said, “you two are heroes. You saved all the workmen from what could have been a nasty death. Three cheers for Bill and Ben!” Everyone cheered, and the Twins felt that they had never been prouder.

Redemption
THE diesel was still at the Works as the men tried to figure out what was wrong with him and how to correct it. It was many weeks, and he felt that perhaps he would never get to work again. Finally one day, a workman told him, “There! We’ve looked at everything, and have corrected it. You should have no more problems. If you do, then you might just have to be sent away. But everything should be fine.” This made the diesel happy, and longing to work.
His chance came sooner than expected.
Bill and Ben were hauling a long train back to the China Clay Works, which had been totally rebuilt and much better and safer looking. The train was heavy, and they hadn’t gone far when they had to stop. “If we keep going,” said the drivers, “we’re sure to break something.” The driver came up to the diesel. “This is your chance,” he said. “Bill and Ben need your help with some trucks. Do you think you can do it?” “I certainly hope so!” replied the diesel.
He made his way to the Twins. “Nice to see you two again,” he said. “This time, it looks as though you need my help!” “Yes please!” So the diesel coupled on, and off they went. Everything was running smoothly, when they came to Gordon’s Hill. The diesel and his driver were anxious. “Let’s stop and go back down,” suggested the diesel, “so as not to overdo it too soon.” “Good idea,” said his driver, and so the three engines backed down again.
After taking a short rest, they started up again. “Well,” said the diesel’s driver, “it’s now or never.” The engines roared up the hill. The diesel started to worry again, when suddenly he found himself at the top. “Hooray!” he said. The rest of the trip was an ease, and they soon found themselves at the Clay Pits, the diesel’s new home.
A week later, an official naming was held. All the engines were there, and the Fat Controller proudly announced, “This diesel, though he started out with trouble, overcame that a week ago, and is now absolutely fine. I am proud to name him… Derek! He is an invaluable asset to the China Clay Works.” Derek beamed. He felt happy, and now he had, at last, a real home.
