The Maritime Mystery Countdown The sea is a mysterious place. Accidents are usually fatal. Usually, it's obvious as to what happened. But sometimes... not so much. The mysteries of the sea are often more interesting and headscratching than those on land. Why? That's because the sea is huge and strange things happen more easily than on land. And now... we're gonna take a look at some of the biggest mysteries the sea has to offer. Welcome to The Maritime Mystery Countdown, a countdown of The 35 All-Time Biggest Mysteries of the Sea. We've got ghost ships, disappearances, planes gone missing, the Bermuda Triangle, and so much more. Break out your magnifying glasses, and let's begin our quest on this ultimate list of the ultimate mysteries.

35) AtlantisLet's just jump right in with one of the most famous mysteries of all time - the lost city of Atlantis. Did this lost continent really exist? Maybe it did, maybe it didn't, but you have to admit that things like the Bimini Road are quite mysterious and of course, rather interesting to scientists. Ultimately, we may never know if Plato was making stuff up or if Atlantis really existed, but all those underwater sights are rather mysterious to say the least. And with those out of the way, we can dive on in our countdown to the even more mysterious things of the sea.

34) The Philadelphia ExperimentOn October 28, 1943 the American warship USS Eldridge (DE-173) supposedly underwent an experiment where it was rendered invisible for a period of time. Though many say it is a hoax and the US Navy denies the experiment ever took place, it still cements its place in popular culture as one of the most unusual mysteries of the sea. Chances are, this experiment never took place, but that has not stopped people from theorizing what could have happened if this experiment had taken place.

33) USS ScorpionThe USS Scorpion was tragic loss when it sank in 1968, taking all 99 of its crew members down with it... but what exactly happened? No one knows for sure, and expeditions to the wreckage sight haven't told us much either. Could the Soviets have played a role in it? Did one of its own torpedoes malfunction? Or perhaps the propeller stopped working properly. We may never know, but it's still one of the most tragic losses in naval history.

32) MV JoyitaThe MV Joyita set sail from Samoa's Apia harbor on October 3, 1955, but, not having arrived at Tokelau Islands at the scheduled time, it was reported overdue and missing. The disappearance shocked the world until some five weeks later, on November 10, a merchant ship, the Tuvalu, found the Joyita drifting north of Vanua Levu. She was capsized, and quite damaged, but still remained afloat. However, none of the 25 people on board her were ever found. One of the most famous 'ghost ships', she is often considered the Mary Celeste of the South Pacific, but after running aground twice after being rebuilt, she was eventually scrapped. Her mystery continues to this day.

31) The Stratotanker IncidentOn August 28, 1963, two US Air Force KC-135 Stratotankers collided with each other in mid-air, over a piece of ocean we call the Bermuda Triangle. Both planes dropped out of the radar screens at the exact same moment, yet, according to original reports, there were two distinct crash sights when wreckage was found - over 160 miles apart. Could this be a crazy coincidence? Could there have been currents at work here? Or, could one of the crash sights have been no more than seaweed and driftwood wrapped around an old buoy? That's what the official evidence suggests, but there are still several people who believe something much bigger was at play here.

30) The Fiji PhoneLost cell phones are normally nothing of note, however, one phone, found in a taxi in Fiji in 2014, was very much so. Found in the phone was a video that depicted the brutal murder of four men by gunshot. Taking place in the open ocean, the murders were never identified until the video was found, but it did spark several investigations into what happened. However, no one knows as of yet who the killers and victims were, nor were it took place, this remaining a chilling unsolved mystery. The video can be viewed here (warning: graphic content).
