"...watch Butcher Hall."
"That came out of nowhere."
"True, but if we accept a theory that he is not the killer then it looks as though he will be struck down next. We must find him and make sure to keep an eye on him."

"Well, I've had a few officers keep an eye on the area where he works; nothing of interest yet, so for now we'll just have to wait for any news to come from them" Gent explained.
"I see; so what will you do then?" Gunnarson asked.
"I'm having a couple detectives interview the four men we arrested; trying to see what they can find out from them if there's connections to any of the other crimes" Gent replied.
"Makes sense to me" Gunnarson said
......
"So why did Ronald Wright have to die?" Detective Walton asked.
"He didn't pay up, so we made him pay- simple as that" Klein said with a shrug; but Walton still had questions in mind, and he was going to get information out of them.

"Now, then," I said to her, "how did you get kidnapped?"
Cricket thought for a moment. "I don't know," she said finally. "I can't remember anything..."
----------------
"This is going just as planned. Hartley, poor bastard..."
----------------
"Alright," said Walton, "Now then..."

"If Wright was killed over a debt... then what was the deal with the hotel and warehouse?" Walton asked.
"We don't know anything about the hotel; the warehouse though... there's a reason why debtors who don't pay up disappear" Klein said with a grin.
"So you bring people there to die!?" Walton exclaimed.
"Of course not! They're already dead when they arrive. We simply alert the man who runs the place where he can get some fresh meat" Klein explained.
"What is this, some sort of cannibalistic cult?" Walton said dismissively.
"Are you kidding? There's no money to be made in cannibalism. Organs though... the guy who runs the place really knows how to make a buck off them" Klein replied.
"What are you getting at? You and I both know you can't just take an organ out of someone and place it into someone else" Walton shot back
(AUTHOR'S NOTE- the first successful organ transplant was not until 1954; this story takes place in 1946)
"Not really... but the guy, again, he knows people who pay top dollar for human organs and meat" Klein explained.
"You'd better start making sense Klein, cause right now you're looking at the death sentence" Walton warned.
"Hey! I'm just telling you what they guy told me; I don't work for him, I just supply him is all" Klein exclaimed.

Meanwhile, The Man had stood up. Paying for his scone and coffee, he headed over to a bookshop out of curiosity. Eventually he decided to buy a book on ancient Egypt. Leaving the bookstore, he took a walk through an alleyway, when he heard it.
"No! Let me go!" a woman screamed.
The Man rushed to wear he could see what was going on without anyone noticing. It was all to obvious. The man was drunk and quickly overpowering the girl, who could not resist against the knife wielder.
Taking out his pistol, he loaded it, aimed, and fired six shots. The man fell dead, and the girl stumbled over out of breath.
The Man turned and left the scene. "Too many goddamn troublemakers. I swear, in this day and age you can't trust anyone. Society is a menace. If only our police systems could help prevent this kind of stuff from happening... grr..." He clenched his fist.
-----------
Gent was speaking with Gunnarson when the phone rang. He picked it up.
"Hello? What's that? WHAT?! Butcher Hall found dead in an alleyway, shot six times?!"

"All right, give me the details" Gent said as he began writing information down.
......
"So why wasn't Wright brought to the warehouse then?" Walton asked.
"Beats me; guess he didn't get a chance to recover the body" Klein shrugged.
"Ok, then answer this smart guy... If you don't know anything about the hotel... why was Bloody Maury the one responsible for the gas attack against the woman found alive in there? And for that matter, if everyone is dead upon arrival, why wasn't she?" Walton asked Sternly, as Klein suddenly became nervous.
"Because sometimes the victims aren't dead yet!" the fourth man said. "Sometimes he likes to toy around with the debtors; make them "pay" before killing them! Since she was alive he could have ratted him out and we'd have no one to dispose of the bodies" he continued.
"So he tried to kill her and ended up killing two policemen instead..." Walton observed.
"And when he was caught, we couldn't risk getting caught ourselves, so loudmouth here put him down" Klein added on angrily.
"You know what? If it will get me a lighter sentence, I'm willing to cooperate" the fourth man said defiantly.
"Finally some pieces are coming together... eat your heart out Gunnarson" Walton said with a grin
......
At last, a thought occurred to me.
"Tell me, have you borrowed any money recently? Perhaps from one of the dirty four?" I asked.
"Now that you mention it..."

"...a friend of mine did borrow money from Butcher Hall, and when she failed to pay for it, I gave her the cash. But that's my only connection to them."

"Then something doesn't add up" I concluded. "Let's assume for just a moment... that this facility is somehow directly connected with the Dirty Four. I did overhear some of the officers saying how the missing persons they were finding all had the same thing in common- a debt that was never payed to one of the four. Now, If they would send debtors their to "pay" if you will... why would you end up there?" I finished. Damn it all, I wish I had a brain like Gunnarson or Poirot.

"Well," she said, sipping her coffee, "I have no honest clue."
-----------------
"F*ck," said Gent at the crime scene.
Gunnarson stared it him. Gent put a lopsided smile on his face. "Er... pardon the language. This case is just getting to me..."
"I see."

"At any rate, I've seen all I need to see; I'm heading back to Scotland Yard. I can't take it anymore with these crime scenes; I'm sticking to my office. Detective Byrne, have the report on my desk when you are done looking around here, ok?" Gent asked.
"Of course sir" Byrne replied.
"Gunnarson" and Gent tipped his hat as he went to leave, while Gunnarson went to look at the body.

"Well," said Cricket, "it's been nice, but I have to go somewhere..."
"You do remember..."
"Sure, follow me if you wish. But what I have to do is private so do not come near me."
"Right."
---------------
The Man was in a pub when Cricket came in. "You're late," he said.
"Sorry."
"No matter. You have him under your spell right?"
"I'm not a witch..."
"Some would beg to differ."
----------------
"Huh," I thought, "wonder what she's talking about in there. Oh well, none of my business..."
----------------
Gunnarson inspected the body.

"This was a different person than the one who killed the other three" Gunnarson concluded
"What brings you to that conclusion?" Byrne asked.
"Think about it- the other three were killed in a way that was ironic- Volcano Al burned alive, Henry the iceberg froze to death and One-Eyed Jack was shot in his good eye. You would think that Butcher Hall would meet some sort of gory end, but no- shot six times, and from what I can tell he died rather quickly" Gunnarson explained.
"Makes sense to me" Byrne concurred.

"Excuse me," said another officer, "but we've found a girl..."
"And?" asked Gunnarson.
"We'll she claims Hall tried to rape her."
"I see..."
"And then someone shot him six times."
"Ah! So justice was served I see..."

"Well, whoever these two men are; I suppose the city, in a way, owes them a little" Byrne observed. "after all, by taking out the dirty four they've effectively destroyed the illegal money lending market in London" he noted.
"Yea, and the small time ones in the same business they were in don't have nearly as many resources as they did; I doubt they'll be able to take their place" Gunnarson added.
"So what now then?" Byrne asked.

|
|
Post by Eyes on Mar 5, 2017 2:22:09 GMT -5
"Wait a second... could the murder of the Dirty Four have been just a normal citizen who realized that the police's hands were tied and decided that he would take matters into his own hands and see that justice would be served?"
"Hmm..." said Byrne. "That could be it..."
|
|
|

"But then that goes back to what we just said... two different styles of killing. Could two people have come to that conclusion? Unless Hall's murder was just pure chance; you know, a vigilante shooting him dead because he saw a rape about to happen" Byrne theorized.

"That, or, perhaps the man was stalking Hall, but when he attacked the girl realized the only chance was to shoot... it could be a coincidence, but then again it's possible it wasn't."
"Hmm, good point..."
--------------
"So the plan is in action?" asked The Man.
"Yes."
"Good."
He nodded his head as a form of respect, and took a sip of his beer. Cricket got up and walked out.

I saw that she was done with her business, then waited to see what would happen next.
......
"So it was a neutral player all of the Dirty Four dealt with then" Walton asked the four.
"Of course; we may have been competition, but we still had common ground" Klein admitted.
Standing up, Walton looked at his notes. "Gent is going to need to hear about this; thank you gentlemen; for your cooperation I'll put in a word; perhaps you will get lenient sentences" he said as he left. The four were returned to their cells.
In his office, Gent got a visit from Walton. "Well sir, I think we cracked the mystery on the warehouse; good news is we know what it is- bad news is even they did not know who the guy is we're dealing with" Walton said.
"all right; just tell me what you do know then" Gent said; relieved that at least part of the case had been solved.

Cricket came out. "So," I asked, "where are you headed off to next?"
"Hmm... I don't know. I'm feeling rather tired to be honest."
"Back to the hotel then?"
"Yes... for more coffee!"

"I think we've had enough coffee; I'd rather rest" Cricket admitted. Quite Frankly, I couldn't really argue there.
So she went into her room and I went into mine. I laid on my bed and decided to rest for a while; looks like there wasn't much I could do for now. At least the police now had the area secure, so all was safe. I decided to give Gunnarson a call; it was about time I got updated on the situation
......
Gunnarson was resting at home, having just returned from the Butcher Hall crime scene, when his phone started ringing.
