"No, Walton. Gunnarson is my friend. I'd trust him with my very life if need be. If he thinks I should be there, I'm there."
"You'd actually trust that Swedish son of a bitch?" Walton sneered. "Even after all of the incorrect things he's done, all the botched cases he's handled, you'd still trust him?"
Gent looked into Walton's eyes. Walton shrank back.
"Yes." And Gent left the room.

Arriving with some officers and a detective to take charge of this investigation, Gent was shocked with what he found.
"Well, the good news is, a good 20, even 30 cases may be closed with this find" Gent said as he walked towards Gunnarson
"What's the bad news?" Gunnarson asked.

"My pants are ruined," Gunnarson quipped.
Gent chuckled, then remembered the gore and stopped. He ran his hand through his hair. "Oh dear. Where's Hartley and the other victim?"
"At a hotel across the street."
"I see..."

At the hotel...

I was helping the woman get comfortable in her room; she needed some time to clean up, and since there wasn't really any evidence to find on her body, she was free to clean up.
After she was changed, thanks to a clothing store a few blocks from here, I assured her she was safe here.
"If you need me, I will be in the room next door" I said as I went to leave; after all, she needed some rest, and who was I to bother her with questions right now.

"Thank you," she said.
Just then my stomach growled. I realized I hadn't eaten anything since arriving from Scotland, so I went downstairs to the cafe area inside the hotel and ordered a pastry.

After enjoying a snack, Gunnarson came from across the street and sat down.
"How is she doing?" He asked.
"She's resting right now; there's a pair of officers outside her door, so no one will be bothering her" Hartley assured.
"Well, I will be straight with you- I have no idea how this connects to the murders of One-Eyed Jack or Mr. Wright" Gunnarson said to me.
"That's unfortunate; what does that mean you have to do now?" I asked.

"Let me finish. I have no idea how this connects to the other murders, but I AM sure that the woman is in danger. Once her kidnappers find out that she's been found, they'll spare no time trying to hunt her down. Hartley, I want you to keep an eye on her. Follow her. Protect her. I don't care if she knows this or not, but just make sure she stays alive."
Gunnarson handed his old service revolver to me.
"You're... you're actually giving this to me? Your old service revolver?"
"What? Of course not! This is another gun I bought as a backup."
"Oh."
"Now, just keep her safe. Think you can do that?"

"yes, I can. Guess I picked a bad week to leave my revolver at home" I quipped.
"I'm trusting you on this Hartley; don't disappoint me" Gunnarson said.
"So what is your next move" I asked.

"I'm... afraid I can't tell you that," said Gunnarson.
"Why not?"
"Well... just trust me. I know what I'm doing."
"Alright."
Gunnarson got up and left.

Meanwhile back at the warehouse...

The officers were taking note of who was found among the bodies; a good deal of missing people cases were being solved right now.
"After we got the photographs make sure this mess get's cleaned up and have some officers stationed here; if anyone comes back We need to make sure we get them before they get away" Gent ordered before turning to leave.
"Gent, where are you going?" Gunnarson asked as he saw Gent head towards a car.
"Back to Scotland Yard; there's too much going on for me to keep going to these scenes Gunnarson; I have to be where I am needed so I can direct everything" Gent explained.

"Alright. I'll see you later then."
Just then something caught Gunnarson's attention. "Hmm... could it be...?"
------------
In the hotel, I decided to return to my room.

After checking with the officers to make sure everything was all right, I went into my room and sat on the bed for a while.
"Just what was that place? It could have made Jack the Ripper proud" I thought. But detective work was Gunnarson's job, not mine. All I did was help out here and there along the way. All I could do now was wait... wait for the next move to be made. But what, and when?

I decided to go out and take a walk. I didn't stray far, however, and always kept a good look at the window.
About half an hour later, I noticed something.

There was a parked car about two blocks down the street from the hotel... it had been there for hours and hadn't moved at all. There were people inside it, but I did not think much of it; it wasn't my business, I believed.
It was odd though, so I decided to alert one of the officers at the scene about it. I proceeded to walk across the street, but made sure I could still see what I needed to see.

"Excuse me," I said, tapping one of the shoulder.
"What the devil do you want?" he snapped. "This is a police investigation!"
"I know, I just wanted to alert you about that car over there."
"What do I care about some damn car? Get lost!"

I took note of his badge number; I would be sure that Gent would get a nice phone call later about one of his most "competent" officers. So instead I turned to the sergeant at the scene.
"That car's been there for hours, not moving. The people haven't even left it" I pointed out.
"We'll keep note of that. We can't address it at this moment, but thanks for the tip" he said as he went back to his work.
At any rate, I began making some notes about the car in case they decided to leave.
License plate: 4RFH SFY Black throughout; four doors. Black tires, A Humber Hawk. 3 men inside.

I turned around and looked at the room. Nothing appeared to be happening. I went back to my hotel room. But when I reached the top of the stairs I saw to my horror that everything was wrong.
The guards had fallen over.
They were dead.
I kicked in the door and immediately noticed a pungent smell. Taking a deep breath, I ran in and found the once more unconscious woman from the warehouse. I grabbed her and brought her outside.

"Officers down! Officer's down!" I screamed across the street. A couple came running over.
"Upstairs, outside the room; gas attack maybe, I don't know" I told them. She was just regaining consciousness when they entered the hotel.
"Where am I?" she asked.
"Everything is fine ma'am; what happened?" I asked.
"It was all so fast; one second I heard a commotion outside the door..."

"...oh hey, is my prince charming back again then?"
I blushed. She chuckled, but apparently that hurt her head because she grasped it.
"Don't worry, everything is under control. But know this much - someone is trying to kill you. And I don't know who. So I have orders to stay by your side until I do."

Someone was just walking out the hotel, he seemed to be in a hurry. He bumped into me on his way.
"oops, sorry" he quickly said before moving on. But something fell out of his jacket.
"Hey! You dropped your... gas canister?" I said in confusion. Then he had a look on his face where he knew he was busted.
"Stop him! He's responsible for the attack!" I shouted. I joined some officers and ran after him. He was making his way towards the parked car. He almost made it too; but he ran into lamp post when he looked back for a moment, slowing him down long enough for an officer to tackle and cuff him.
"You're under arrest for double homicide" the officer said. As we looked up, the car sped off; seems they were involved after all.
"Someone might want to tell Gent; this just got interesting" the Sergeant observed.
