Chapter 1
The Reverend Artaxerxes Johnson came out of the drive and walked down the lane.
He had been asked to tea by Mr. J. O'Harris. The Reverend did not like O'Harris. They were at the opposite end of the theological spectrum - the Reverend was perhaps the most devout Christian you'd ever met, while O'Harris was a downright obstinate atheist.
No, thought the Reverend as he walked down the lane, this wouldn't be a regular tea; this would be a sporting match.
II
When he arrived at the Willows (Mr. O'Harris's house), he promptly rang the bell.
A stout, middle-aged woman opened the door.
"Ah! Good afternoon, Reverend."
"Good afternoon, Mrs. Wiggins. Mr. O'Harris has asked me to tea."
"Just so, just so," said Mrs. Wiggins, "right this way, sir." Then, under her breath she muttered, "I wonder why he even has anything to do with the old sinner..."
The Reverend entered the room. Spread out on the table was a very nice tea; but that was not what he noticed. He noticed a smug-looking man who had already begun.
"Good afternoon, Mr. O'Harris."
"Good afternoon, Rev. Johnson."
The Reverend sat down, bowed his hea-
O'Harris didn't suppress the laugh.
"You old fools and your religion!"
The Reverend mearly glared at him, and picked up his cup.
As they ate, they talked - no, that would be too mild a term. Argued wouldn't even describe the shouting that followed in that half hour.
At last, the Reverend stood up, gasping for breath. O'Harris smirked.
"Religion... it's just crazy. There is no God."
The Reverend turned around, looking angry, and leaned in the other man's face.
"You old sinner. God won't take that sitting down. He will surely wipe you off the FACE OF THE EARTH!"
He nearly ran into the housemaid as he left the room...
