61. Lamb of God - โLaid to Restโ
Ashes of the Wake was partially inspired by the war in Iraq, and the result was several of LoGโs most iconic songs. The opening track is a blaring, no shits given groove metal song, dominated by Randy Blytheโs powerful voice.

60. King Diamond - โAbigailโ
The title track to King Diamondโs conceptual opus ties the whole album together in a killer song that lets the King shine with plenty of ghostly falsetto notes that never fail to captivate. And donโt forget Andy LaRocqueโs fantastic guitar skills!

59. Judas Priest - โBeyond the Realms of Deathโ
In 1990, Judas Priest found themselves surrounded by controversy when the parents of a teenager who committed suicide sued the band for allegedly including secret messages urging listeners to kill themselves on their cover of Spooky Toothโs โBetter by You, Better Than Meโ. Obviously it was a load of bunk, and how ironic that the centerpiece of Stained Class, the album the cover was released on, was actually a song about depression that sought to understand the suicidal and offer them some hope. A song that helped the development of the metal ballad, it also features one of Rob Halfordโs most beloved performances.

58. Darkthrone - โTransilvanian Hungerโ
Once again it must be noted that early Norwegian black metal was intertwined with Naziism, but thankfully Darkthrone is one of the few bands that has come forward, acknowledged and apologized for statements theyโd made at the time. Thankfully songs like this still hold up, and helped shape the genre beyond idealistic roots.

56. Deep Purple - โHighway Starโ
The opening track to Deep Purpleโs most iconic album, Machine Head, is a blasting force of classic rock nostalgia. While the band certainly arenโt as heavy as most metal nowadays, thereโs no denying that โHighway Starโ, with its fast-paced drive and classic Blackmore playing, wasnโt one of the most important songs in the development of the faster places that metal would head to in the future.

50. Disturbed - โDown with the Sicknessโ
In the history of nu metal, few songs are as iconic as this Disturbed hit. From the David Draimanโs iconic tribal cry to the chorus, this is an undisputed classic (although Iโm sure few people would miss that bridge).

49. Gojira - โFlying Whalesโ
Hard to believe that a song called โFlying Whalesโ could have such an impact on the wide genre of extreme metal, but then Gojira were always a different breed. Utilizing clean passages alongside heavy as fuck ones, and with an environmental message at its heart, this leviathan of a track is now their signature song.

46. Danzig - โMotherโ
The Elvis of heavy metal, Glenn Danzigโs solo band dropped a massive song in the form of โMotherโ on their 1988 self-titled review. Written in response to the Parentโs Music Resource Center, it was rereleased in 1993 to even bigger commercial success and remains the bandโs most popular song.

45. Slayer - โAngel of Deathโ
In the history of metal, few songs have been as controversial as the opening track on Slayerโs Reign in Blood. Written about Josef Mengele and his human experiments at Auschwitz, Slayer were accused of being Nazis as soon as the song was released. Yet at its core itโs merely a retelling of the cruelty of mankind in as blunt a fashion as possible, and being horrified by it is kind of the point. Sonically itโs like a nuclear eruption that never lets up.

43. Mercyful Fate - โThe Oathโ
The sophomore album from Denmarkโs greatest metal band took everything that made Melissa great and intensified it. The music was more complex, King Diamondโs falsetto was even more present, and the Satanic lyrics were even more hellish. The quasi-title track remains the bandโs signature song: a 7 and a half minute ode to Satan that allows guitar duo Michael Denner and Hank Shermann to let the fuck loose.

Few bands were as important in death metalโs formative years as Morbid Angel. With Trey Azagthothโs intense guitar playing creating an electrifying experience, their debut album Altars of Madness remains one of the genreโs greatest. This iconic track showed how catchy even extreme metal could be.
