Comparisons Written by Frank
Talyllyn, Dolgoch, Rheneas and Skarloey were all talking in the shed, when Duke pulled into the shed. "Good evening everyone; I see we are all getting along." Duke observed "Yes indeed; we rarely get to see each other and have a lot of catching up to do" Skarloey explained. "Is it true that on the Talyllyn Railway, every engine is a twin a Skarloey Railway engine?" Duke asked. "Yes indeed; and each set of twins looks very much alike, except for the color" Talyllyn explained. Duke was surprised; he had a twin as well, an engine named Prince. However, Prince lived on the Ffestiniog Railway, and on that railway Duke and Prince were the only engines where one twin was on Sodor and the other was on the mainland.
"So who is twins with who?" Duke asked. Talyllyn proceeded to explain "Well, as you know Skarloey is my twin, and Rheneas is Dolgoch's twin. But there is also an engine named Sir Haydn, who is Sir Handel's twin. An engine named Edward Thomas, who is Peter Sam's twin. Midlander is Rusty's twin, Douglas is Duncan's twin and Tom Rolt is Ivo Hugh's twin" Talyllyn finished. "What about Fred the Diesel?" Duke asked. "His twin is a little fellow named Alf." Dolgoch added. "Very interesting; you certainly have a nice little fleet there." Duke observed "Oh yes; granted, we don't really do the kind of work you engines still do, but it is very pleasant giving passengers rides up and down the countryside." Talyllyn explained.
"Maybe we should be renamed the twin railways" Rheneas quipped "Actually, there's one engine here that prevents us from doing that" Duke said. "Who?" The others asked, confused. "Me; my twin is on the Ffestiniog Railway!" Duke pointed out. And the engines all had a good laugh before falling asleep.

Erosion Written by Diesel 11
Talyllyn and Dolgoch were enjoying their stay on Sodor. By the second day, they had already decided that it was a beautiful place that they loved to be on. Duncan was the only engine against them. “Huh!” he snorted, whenever they passed by. “A lot of rubbish!” Rusty looked horrified, “Why on earth would you call them rubbish?” “They take the passengers, and leave me to take the trucks,” muttered Duncan. “But it’s a special time for them. After all, they shan’t be here too long.” But Duncan didn’t listen. He just snorted along the line with his trucks, growling rudely.
At the station, he saw Talyllyn arrive. “You’re stealing my coaches!” growled Duncan. Talyllyn frowned. “It isn’t my fault; it’s the work I’ve been given to do.” “Huh!” snorted Duncan. “That may be, but I’d love to give the Thin Controller a piece of my mind!” ‘Never mind,” sympathized Talyllyn, I shan’t be here for long.” The whistle blew, and he chuffed away.
Duncan was in a worse mood than ever. He clanked about, and bumped the trucks furiously. “Shut up!” he growled, “an’ stop whatever you’re doing!” The trucks were annoyed, “Let’s teach him a lesson,” they said to each other.
It been raining the night before, and at one spot, the ground had started to erode. That spot was a causeway in the middle of a lake, and the erosion had started to break it. Engines had to go carefully at this part of the line, but Duncan had forgotten. As he roared across, the trucks put there plan into action. “Alright, bump him!” they yelled. Suddenly, Duncan was bumped and rolled and roaring along. Ahead was the bad piece of track. “Oh, help!” he wailed. He screeched along, when suddenly there was a CRACK! The rails snapped and Duncan’s driver and fireman jumped out just as Duncan slid, fell over, and lay there, deep in the lake. The trucks were derailed, and they laughed and laughed. Duncan just blubbered.
Soon, workmen came with cranes, and lifted Duncan out. The Thin Controller then came up. “You’ve put us in an awkward place, Duncan. It’s lucky that Talyllyn and Dolgoch are here!” Duncan groaned. “You’ll have to go to the Works to be mended. I hope that when you come home, you’ll be a much more sensible and reliable engine.” Duncan muttered something under his breath, as he was hauled away to the Works.

A Trip To Remember Written by Diesel 11 Talyllyn and Dolgoch were busy bustling about to and fro, carrying passengers to the sites of Sodor. They loved it here. It made them nostalgic of their younger lives. A few days into their stay, it was decided that they would double-head a special train. “This will be a fine sight,” said the Thin Controller, “You two are special engines.” Duncan and Sir Handel just snorted, but the rest of the engines congratulated the two. “This will be nice,” said Rusty. “Indeed,” said Duke, “I remember double-heading a train with Fal– er, Sir Handel, once. That was a day to remember.” Sir Handel growled. “I’m glad you saved me from falling down the hill, but you needn’t rub it in.” Peter Sam laughed. “I’m sure that you will enjoy yourselves,” he said to Talyllyn and Dolgoch. “Good luck!” As it turned out, they’d need it!
The next morning, Talyllyn was waiting for Dolgoch at the station. Dolgoch was late. “I wonder where he is,” said Talyllyn. “Never mind,” said his fireman, “Let’s fill you up with water.” They finished, and the fireman opened the injector to let the water flow in, when Dolgoch puffed up. “Phew!” he said, “There was a sheep on the line, and it was a good while before we could get it to ‘shoo’.” “Never mind,” said Talyllyn. “Let’s enjoy our trip now.” Dolgoch coupled on to the train, and Talyllyn coupled on in front of him. The Guard blew his whistle and waved his flag, and they were off.
The trip started out fine, but presently Talyllyn noticed that something was wrong. “I’m short of steam,” he said. His driver was concerned, “There’s only a thin wisp coming out. We’d better see what’s wrong.” They stopped the train. The passengers were alarmed, but the driver quieted them. “We’re just making sure that Talyllyn is fine,” he said. “I feel all bloated,” said Talyllyn, “like I’d have too much water.” The fireman stopped. He stared. He shut his eyes. “Oh, brother,” he said. “What?” asked the driver. “Remember when we were at the station? I’d opened the injector to let the water in, but…” “…You never closed it,” finished the driver. “Oh no!” They rushed into the cab and quickly closed the injector.
“Well, that does it!” said the fireman. “There’s too much water in the boiler, so the fire couldn’t boil it fast enough. The pistons don’t have enough steam too move, and so we’re stuck here. Dolgoch isn’t strong enough to pull the whole train with this added weight.” “We’d better be glad that there was no priming. Then Talyllyn would’ve been done for.” He patted his engine. Priming occurs when too much water is in the boiler and some of it seeps into the cylinders. When the pistons move up and down on the water, the pressure can cause the pistons to bend out of shape. Often it means that the engine has to be taken out of service and not used again. “We’ll have to flush some of the water out of the boiler,” said the driver, “but it will be a while before we can move again.” The Thin Controller was on the train, and when he heard, he suddenly brightened up. “I have an idea,” he said.
A few minutes later, Skarloey and Rheneas appeared. “I’m sorry about your problem, Talyllyn,” said Skarloey. “We’re hear to help, and make this a real trip to remember.” The two engines buffered up, and the train started again. When they reached the station, lots of people cheered. The four engines had made a most historic trip today. The Thin Controller congratulated them. “An excellent job,” he said. “This was, most definitely, a highlight in the history of our railway.” Talyllyn was fine again now, and so the four engines scuttled away to the shed. This had been a quite interesting day.

Homeward Bound Written by Frank & Diesel 11 It had been an wonderful five days for the Skarloey Railway. Rail enthusiasts from Europe and America flocked to the Island of Sodor to see the rare sight of not one, but two sets of old twin engines working together on the same railway. Skarloey, Talyllyn, Dolgoch, and Rheneas enjoyed every day of their time together, but sadly it was now time for Talyllyn and Dolgoch to go home. On the last night of their visit, the four engines were talking in the sheds. "It was wonderful to see you again Talyllyn; I just can't believe that five days have already come and gone." "Well Skarloey, I enjoyed my stay here too, but you know the old saying: all good things must come to an end. Not to mention, Dolgoch and I have a railway to run too; the Talyllyn railway may just be a heritage railway now, but it is our railway, and it is our job to keep it running" Talyllyn finished. "Rheneas, you and Skarloey are blessed; your railway still serves a useful role in the running of this island; you are not just a heritage railway here, you are a functioning transportation system serving the towns it runs through, and work continues in your quarries, providing many jobs to the hardworking local Sudrians here. Never forget how blessed this railway is; anywhere else in the world, this may very well have become another heritage railway" Dolgoch finished.
The next day was a quiet day for the Skarloey railway. While the other engines were hard at work, Skarloey and Rheneas brought Talyllyn and Dolgoch to the transfer station at Crovan's Gate. Skarloey and Rheneas looked on as their twins were loaded onto flatcars to be brought back to Wales. "Goodbye Talyllyn, keep working hard and being a really useful engine!" Skarloey said to his twin. "Goodbye Dolgoch; I hope we'll see each other again soon" Rheneas said to his twin. "Goodbye Skarloey; it has been a pleasure" Talyllyn replied. "Goodbye Rheneas, it may be a long time before it happens, but one day, we will meet again" Dolgoch finished.
The Thin Controller came up. "Why are you saying goodbye? You are going with them." "What?!" "Yes, I've arranged this surprise for you to make your birthday even better." "Oh, thank you, Sir!" Sir Handel and Peter Sam were just passing through with passenger trains, and Duncan was coming through with a goods train when they heard the Thin Controller make his announcement. The rail enthusiasts in the passenger coaches were ecstatic to hear the news.
The three steam engines were joined by Duke and Rusty as Skarloey and Rheneas were loaded onto the flatcars Bear the diesel slowly left the platform with them to a chorus of cheers and whistles for the four old twins.
