In the normal world, the Colorfolk are seen as legendary heroes in the history of Ordos. To Ordosians, they are held in the same reverence as King Arthur in Great Britain or even certain Biblical figures to Christians. As far as Ordosians "remember" there really were Colorfolk, but rather than powerful, humble mages they were a Guild of Scholars who welcomed a time of tolerance and acceptance in an era and region that was noticeably lacking at the time. Many of the Colorfolk's greatest feats are remembered as legends to the Ordosians; but rather than remembering them as historical events, they are remembered as tall tales or they are seen as stories with lessons for everyday life.
Lets take a look at some of the "legends" of the Colorfolk that have managed to survive into Ordosian culture:
Arthur Blackson and the Great Horned Beast
When a terrifying, large monster threatened the population, Arthur Blackson, a Blacksmith from the "celebrated guild of scholars," did what none of the knights of Ordos were able to do: he took his javelin, and with a mighty throw he slayed the beast that devastated the town.
Historians believe that the "great horned beast" was in fact a particularly large, aggressive bull that escaped its enclosure and went on a rampage; the story is told as a metaphor for believing in oneself; though not a knight or warrior, Blackson the Blacksmith was able to rise to the challenge and slay the beast, protecting everyone in the town.
The Colorfolk and the Apocalypse War
In the 13th century, legend speaks of a decade long conflict where the Colorfolk of Ordos stood alone and fought back against "the very incarnations of War, Death, Famine and Pestilence." Though the legend speaks of the Colorfolk fighting back against armies that wielded the power of these forces, historians think that during this time, the island just happened to be embroiled in a civil war, plague, bad harvest and population decline all at the same time, and the Colorfolk were the ones who held the island together and ultimately helped the Ordosians get back to normal. This tale is often used as a lesson in the value of knowledge; the scholarly Colorfolk used their knowledge to fight back against war, death, famine and pestilence and bring the island out of a literal apocalypse.
