1 October 1800 - Third Treaty of San IldefonsoThis treaty gave France control of the Louisiana Territory again when Spain agreed to exchange it for territories in Tuscany. While they did this on the condition that France never yield it to an English-speaking government, it would later land in American hands.

4 March 1801 - Thomas Jefferson Becomes PresidentOn this day Thomas Jefferson became the third president of the United States of America. Under his reign, America took many leaps in progress, as he acquired more land for the country and sent out several explorers to the west. Alexander Hamilton's support of Jefferson played a large part in getting him elected, but it sowed discord between Hamilton and Aaron Burr, who would become Jefferson's VP.

October 1802 - Dessalines and Pรฉtion Switch SidesOriginally fighting in favor of France during the rebellion on Haiti, Dessalines and Pรฉtion decided to change sides when they realized that France wanted to re-establish slavery on the island. This would eventually help the island gain independence in 1804.

20 October 1803 - US Senate Ratifies the Louisiana Purchase TreatyOn this day the senate ratified the Louisiana Purchase Treaty by a vote of 24 to 7. The purchase would double the size of the country and open the doors to further expansion westward.

11 July 1804 - Burr-Hamilton DuelTensions had heightened between Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton ever since Burr lost the presidency to Jefferson that they ended up fighting a duel on July 11, 1804. Burr ended up shooting and killing Hamilton, which put an end to two people's careers right when they were in the prime of life. Indeed, this incident would overshadow Burr and pretty much ended his political career.
