"Let me rephrase that. Cricket is a prime suspect to you, but to me... I know who really did it... and I have the proof to back it up."
"Another one of your accusations, Gunnarson?"
"It is not. Let us take of the people here and in turn show how they could have possibly killed the Major."

Before Gunnarson could proceed though, he noticed that everyone was looking at him like he was crazy. "What?" Gunnarson asked.
"Gunnarson... that wasn't a "rephrasing" at all- in fact you completely contradicted yourself. It's just as I suspected, your emotional attachment is interfering with your judgement and I cannot allow you to contribute to this case" Walton said.
"look, just give me a chance to explain, at least give me that" Gunnarson asked, realizing Walton was absolutely right.
"Well, we know it was Mrs Hartley or Mr Cronwall, based on the evidence. All right, you have one chance Gunnarson, but if you cannot prove your theory, I'm throwing you out of here" Walton warned.
"Fair enough" Gunnarson said. "Hmmm... I think I will start with..."

"Mr. Gothart, and his wife Emily."
"She's still a suspect? Surely not."

"Gunnarson, I told you, they couldn't have done it because they did not have cigarettes or knives; Mrs Gothart does not even smoke" Walton pointed out. "We already eliminated them based on logic and evidence, what game are you playing" he said sternly.
"Let me explain; you see..."

"I never eliminate someone until the person who actually did it has been found. Several times the police have written off people when in fact they did it all along, and thus I'm still including them. Here's how they could have done it if they had done it..."

"You're bluffing Gunnarson" Walton said.
"what?" Gunnarson asked, confused.
"if you knew who did it, you'd just tell us instead of going into some rediculous monologue. This isn't a mystery novel Gunnarson, this is real life" Walton pointed out. Gunnarson stared awkwardly for a bit, while everyone else realized how true Walton's logic was.
"... I'll explain my reasoning later. As to the Gotharts, you see...eh, oh, uh...." Gunnarson said, losing his train of thought.
"As I suspected; utterly impossible, they did not have knives or cigarettes. Now focus on the two that it could have been! The only thing you are proving right now is that you are one of the worst detectives I have ever met" Walton said
"Hang on, hang on, I just didn't know where to begin. Ah, I got it. You see..."

"Let's with where they were in the caves, who saw them, and at what point they could have done it."
"Unnecessary, but continue" Hardstuckle said
"No, I forbid it. It is a complete waste of time and will accomplish nothing" Walton ordered.
"I don't work for you, remember" Gunnarson said.
"No, but I am a sworn officer and you are a civilian, I have full authority to forbid you from contributing to this investigation, and you are nearing that point" Walton said.
"Surely he is onto something; give him a chance" Hardstuckle proposed

"Hardstukle, I'm telling you from experience- what Gunnarson wants to do is trivial nonsense" Walton warned
"I know, but maybe he's onto something" Hardstuckle said
"Yes, another hunch" Walton quipped.
"Anyway, we all started together, and when we came to the first fork in the cave, they went down the left most path..." Gunnarson began
"Gunnarson! What are you doing!? You're ignoring your own trifecta! Focus on how you really solve a case!!" I blurted out.
Gunnarson remained silent before suddenly laughing. "Thank you for reminding me my friend; how could I forget the importance of means, motive and opportunity"
"AND evidence" Walton interjected.
"Implied. At any rate, considering my trifecta... alright. Probably best to start from the beginning, so I will start with..."

"Motive. Now, if you'll pardon me, we're starting from the beginning, so I'm going to include all the suspects and we'll narrow it back down to the logical ones as we go along."
"Oh fine," said Walton. "Actually, no, it's not fine. It's completely unnecessary, there is absolutely no point in doing this" but go ahead..."
"I assure you I have a reason- if we are to account for all the evidence we have found, what better way to summarize our findings" Gunnarson argued.
"Fine; but no hunches, only evidence" Walton warned.
"Thank you. Now, who here had motives for the death of the Major?"

"The only one we've been able to discern is the nephew; he's the only one here with a substantial relationship to the major, and it turns out that despite his admiration, he also resented him for not turning over the trust fund like he was supposed to five years ago" Hardstuckle explained.
"It's not fair! I turned 18! That money was rightfully mine! Why am I 23 and he is still holding onto my parents money?!" Cronwall blurted out, before meekly sitting down again.

"Right," said Gunnarson. "Now next up - who had the Means to kill the Major?"

"Well, his rope was sabotaged with a knife. The Gotharts didn't have knives, and neither did the three of us" Amelia said, indicating the three old maids.
"On the other hand, You, The Hartley's, Picard and Cronwall did have knives" Walton pointed out.
"Yes, that is correct. But then there is the matter of smoking; Hartley and I did not have cigarettes, but Cricket, Picard and Cronwall did" Gunnarson explained.
"And as you will recall, despite finding my lighter at the crime scene, you brilliantly deduced my innocence you found the broken flint in the lighter, thus proving it was planted and narrowing it down to two suspects" Picard added to the conversation, replying directly to Gunnarson

"Right," said Gunnarson. "Now that we've covered the Means... Opportunity remains."

"Now, except for the two times where they were separated, Hartley can account for most of Cricket's movements. And the nephew was with Picard most of the time, except for one or two separations. In theory, either of you did have the opportunity to kill the Major" Gunnarson explained.
I had to stand up and go to the other side of the room to calm down for a bit; my wife, a murderer?! I mean, I hoped it wasn't so, but the fact that she was one of only two suspects remaining... it was nerve-racking.

"Now, just for argument's sake, let's go through the rest of the people here and see if they too, theoretically, had the opportunity to kill the Major as well."
"Absolutely not. The evidence is clear, they are innocent and there are zero reasons to consider them suspects anymore" Walton pointed out.
"Let me rephrase that. We will see where they were at the time, and prove once and for all they are innocent" Gunnarson said.
"All right, but only because it will keep you focused on the real suspects" Walton said.

"Now then, where exactly were each of you" Gunnarson said.
"Well, Emily and I stuck around the Western side of the caverns; we never went near the Eastern precipice where the Major died until after the fact" Mr. Gothart explained.
"And the cave paintings, fossils and crystals that we explored were no where near the precipice either" Amelia stated again.
"Picard and I... did explore the Eastern side of the cave" The nephew admitted.
"We started with the center, but eventually made our way East" I admitted.
"And you Gunnarson?" Walton asked.

"We were together when we explored the center Gunnarson; after we went East and you went your own direction... well, I can't say, there were three tunnels. We went down the one that went east but I didn't see which of the other two you entered" I pointed out.
"But it is moot... Gunnarson may get on my nerves but he's still no murderer. So then that means... the Hartley's, Picard and the nephew were all on the Eastern side of the caves when the murder took place" Walton pointed out.
"And we ruled out Mr. Hartley and Picard... so we're back to two suspects again" Eliza explained.

"Have we though?" asked Gunnarson.
"Huh?" said Walton. "Gunnarson what are you talking about?"
"Are you sure that only Mrs. Hartley and the nephew could have done it?"
"Yes, why?"
"Well maybe you're wrong."
"Gunnarson, if this is just another hunch..."
"It isn't. I know the true killer, and it's not the nephew or Mrs. Hartley, in fact, I have proof..."
And he held up an object.
"This is something I found in the cave and have not yet mentioned. It is a..."

"Gunnarson, did you withhold evidence from a police investigation..." Walton said sternly.
"No, I swear; I was going to bring it up but I never had the chance to!" Gunnarson replied.
"All right; what is it then" Walton said.
Gunnarson revealed something. It was a piece of torn red cloth. "It was on a stalagmite near the precipice; from what I could gather, the killer must have run away in haste when he or she heard a noise, and tripped on the rock, tearing a piece of clothing in the process" Gunnarson explained.
"That doesn't change the fact that the killer smoked and had a knife" Walton reminded him.
