Before we hit the Top 10, I'd like to take some time to mention the bands that I had to cut from the list for lack of space. For Napalm Death helped invent grindcore, Meshuggah's unique style has become quite influential of late, and Annihilator is a great technical thrash band. Also, give your regards to Dio and Ozzy Osbourne, two great artists that unfortunately were cut because they were more solo acts than bands. (But King Diamond's on the list! you say. My response: so?) There's a lot more that could have been on here, like Accept, Danzig, Burzum, Lamb of God, Manowar, At The Gates, Mastodon, Bathory, Behemoth, etc., the list goes on.

RIP to Lemmy, who died in December 2015. His band is one of the most influential in metal history, and without it, speed, thrash, and extreme metal wouldn't be the same. Hell, Metallica even stated that they wouldn't exist without them. Rather samey to the casual listener but not so to metalheads, Lemmy stated that the band was nothing more than rock 'n' roll, but we knew better. #10 is Motรถrhead.

King Diamond makes his second appearance on this list with his first band. England's Venom, Switzerland's Celtic Frost, and Denmark's Mercyful Fate are considered the most important bands of the first wave of black metal, and of them, Mercyful Fate is the best. With actual good production, Hank Sherman and Michael Denner's epic guitar double-attack, the most Satanic lyrics of any band ever, and of course King's recognizable falsetto, they've influenced not just black metal, but also other bands like Metallica, Slayer, Death, the list goes on. Give it up for Mercyful Fate making the list at #9.

These guys started out life as a glam metal act, but were completely overlooked with so many other legendary bands in the scene taking up the spotlight. It wasn't until their fifth album, Cowboys From Hell, that they dropped all glam aspects and became a pure metal band - one of the biggest and best of the '90s, highly influential, and pioneers of the groove metal genre. Motherf*cking Pantera is the #8 band on this list.

It's 1983. Dave Mustaine has just been fired from Metallica and wants revenge. Next door some idiot is playing the bass too goddamn loud. Dave hurls a potted plant at the window. And that, kids, is how Megadeth began. Always wanting to play, heavier, harder, faster, and better, Megadeth is one of the Big 4 of thrash for a reason. Honestly, I can't do much more than leave you with possibly my favorite song of all time, "Hangar 18". Megadeth is #7.

Alright, you're probably wondering how on earth Black Sabbath isn't #1 on this list. I mean, everyone puts them there, why not on this list as well? The thing is, just because they pretty much created metal doesn't make them by default the greatest metal band ever, despite popular belief. They were far from a perfect band, and they had some sh*tty albums at one point. HOWEVER, they're still one of the best bands in the genre, and more than worthy of taking the #6 spot on this list. Black Sabbath everyone!

They're the biggest metal band of all time, so it's no surprise they're on here. I know I diss on Metallica a lot, but that's mainly because I'm pissed at how some of the best musicians in metal completely sold out. But if you only look at their first five albums, it's a perfect career. #5 is Metallica. Lots of people would probably leave you with "Master of Puppets" or something like that, but I'm going with "Orion", which showcases how amazing the late great Cliff Burton really was on the bass. RIP

Black Sabbath created metal, but Priest was the first true metal band. They took the music, slimmed it down, added two guitars, Rob Halford's high-pitched vocals, and ended up becoming big in the '70s, bigger in the '80s, and have a continued success today. #4 - none other than the metal gods Judas Priest.

Slayer is THE thrash band. Their first five albums are classics of the genre, and their speed, heaviness, ferocity, and overall badassary has made them one of the biggest metal bands of all time. Reign In Blood is a perfect album, and Seasons In The Abyss is pretty much one as well. #3 can't go to anyone except F***ing Slayer.

Of course Maiden is on this list. It's not a metal list without them. Honestly, they're the greatest metal band of all time. Why are they not #1 then? Well, you'll have to wait and see. But seriously, they've managed to sell almost 100 million records, they're some of the most talented musicians in history, and their live shows... good god their live shows. #2 is Iron Maiden. Up the irons!

So we've gone through 29 bands already, and there's only one left. Sabbath was #6 and Maiden #2... what could possibly take the top spot? Well... #1 on this list is Death. You're confused, I know. But hear me out. Death had a perfect discography in every sense of the word. Scream Bloody Gore helped create death metal, Leprosy pioneered it, Spiritual Healing furthered it, Human made it more progressive, Individual Thought Patterns went beyond even that, Symbolic took death metal to its very limits and then some, and The Sound of Perseverance was the perfect ending to a perfect career. Metal Sucks readers voted this band #1. If you were to take every metal band and tally up how good their albums are and find a ranking, Death would come in first. They are an amazing band, not for everybody, but any metalhead would love them. And the fact that mastermind Chuck Schuldiner died of cancer in 2001 makes them all the more worthy of taking the top spot on this list. Thanks for checking out this list! Hope you liked it, and maybe now you can see what I define as metal.
