Top 30 Metal Countdown
So Toz and I were having a metal discussion the other night, and I said, "Shall I make a list?" Toz said, "Sure." Well then. These are the Top 30 Greatest Metal Bands of All Time, ranked on their popularity, influence, and just plain awesomeness. Hopefully you'll be able to see what's metal and what's not based on the bands I've chosen. This list IS definitively ranked, so there's no ands, ifs, buts, ors, maybes, or how abouts. Let's start this list with a band that took thrash, and made it heavier, pretty much beginning death metal. They only had two albums, and only the first is an essential listen, but nonetheless, they are an amazing band, highly influential, and just plainly great. At #30, Possessed.

At #29 on the countdown, we have one of two metal bands from Denmark, and they're pretty similar, since some of the members are the same in both bands *cough the lead singer cough*. This band, fronted by Kim Bendix Peterson, AKA King Diamond, has made concept albums an art form, and coupled with King's falsetto and Andy LaRocque's guitar, they've achieved amazing success compared to most Danish artists. Give it up for, well, King Diamond.

This next band is actually one of the most influential in all of metal. Hailing from friggin' Switzerland of all places, they were originally called Hellhammer before rebranding themselves and going on to influence black, speed, and other forms of extreme metal. At #28 is Celtic Frost.

This band is arguably the most influential black metal band of all time, and the most f*cked up band period. They were the first black metal artists to have an official release, and despite being pushed back to 1994, their debut album was still a huge influence. Perhaps best known for their controversy, you can't deny that Mayhem deserves a spot on this list, at #27 to be exact.

According to Loudwire.com, "Death may have won the race to releasing the first death metal record, but Morbid Angel built the damn house." I honestly can't beat that quote. At #26, Morbid Angel.

Nu metal, but heavier and harder. This band is one of the biggest newer metal bands out there, with a rather large fanbase, and the fact that they wear masks has only helped make them better. #25 is of course, Slipknot.

Some say this band is like Iron Maiden and Metallica getting together and having a child. That's not entirely accurate, but close enough for government work. At #24, THE power metal band, the great Helloween.

They may have only four "great" albums in their discography, but even though the rest are pretty bad, these guys are still more than worthy of making the list - after all, Operation: Mindcrime is one of the greatest concept albums in music history. #23 is Queensrรฟche.

THE alt metal band. Weird-ass lyrics, different sounds, crazy vocals, etc. Disturbed is good, but they have nothing on System of a Down. Here they are at #22.

These guys are completely different than anything else in metal. They haven't released an album since 2006, yet their fanbase still loves their four albums like life itself. Different can be good when you're #21 on this list, Tool.

They had the sh*ttiest production till Mayhem came along, they rarely did live shows, yet Satanic lyrics and explosive live shows (when they did them) helped make UK band Venom one of the most influential acts in all of metal history. They take the #20 spot with no prisoners.

These guys were the biggest band of Bay Area thrash's early days, and before it was slimmed down to four bands, they were part of thrash metal's Big 5. Their debut album being pushed back to 1985 didn't help them much, but nevertheless the album, and the band itself are still great to listen and highly influential. Exodus is #19.

Napalm Death invented grindcore, but when Carcass merged it with straight-up death metal, and later broke boundaries in melodic death metal, they merited the #18 spot on this list.

They're perhaps the best black metal band. Taking the genre and making it more symphonic, Emperor nonetheless kept the rawness and heaviness, and that's what really matters. #17

Despite joining the thrash scene rather late in the game, these guys have managed to carve out quite a successful career, and have continued to go strong since the late '80s. Testament is #16.

A unique death metal band isn't something you see everyday. Opeth has become huge within the metal scene, and the Swedes are different from any other death metal act in history - much more progressive, hell, check out this song and you'll see what I'm talking about. They're #15.

Possibly the biggest band from Brazil in the world, Sepultura began as a thrash band with death metal inspirations, but they haven't stayed that way. Founded by the Cavalera brothers, they take the #14 spot on the list.

Queensryche or Dream Theater - which is the better progressive metal band? Personal preference - Queensryche. Popularity, influence, and innovation-wise: Dream Theater. They helped make progressive metal more than anyone ever imagined, with concept albums, technical songs, and plain amazingness. Dream Theater is #13.

The lowest of the Big 4, but still one of the greatest metal bands ever. Slayer began to f*ck with people, Metallica to rock, Megadeth to beat Metallica, but Anthrax began just to have fun. And they've succeeded. #12 - Anthrax!

Taking death metal and making it more brutal, with even more undecipherable vocals, Cannibal Corpse really helped the genre come into its own, hence why they're #11.
