Once upon a time, many years ago, in a world twice divided, pirates ruled the seas. The most feared of these was Captain "Metal Monster" Tuggington. For years he sailed the open blue, fearing no man, in a quest to find treasures beyond his wildest dreams. On the other side of the spectrum was Admiral David "1,000 Eyes" Diesel, head of the Navy and in charge of tracking down every pirate and throwing them in the slammer. These are the stories of the two men's epic quest to beat the other, in the greatest game of cat and mouse there ever was.

"Crossing the sea I will sail
Stare at the face adventure
I am going to travel
Through each tracking
The sea opens its horizon
As the coastline disappears
Memories of past events
Always with me ...
You will escape!
A long journey
You will escape!
It can be executed but it can not be hidden
No matter how far the wind is far
I will never rest ...
I am looking forward to
About the eternal quest"

EPISODE 1 Currently docked in a port town, the crew of the Mechanized Pirates were all mostly gathered at the tavern, drinking, with the captain just finishing a drinking contest as the victor... "Captain! Reports say that navy admiral who's been chasing us all across the seas is at it once again! He's been spotted off the coast nearby!" shouted a crew member as he took a swig of ale "Aye... Well then men, finish your drinks! We'll be setting sail shortly, and when we do, we'll give that navy bastard what he been searching for finally ,a fight out at sea!" shouted Tugginton as his men cheered in agreement

Elsewhere, Admiral David "1,000 Eyes" Diesel was sitting up on deck. As the leader of the Navy he couldn't get much of a break.
Why 1,000 Eyes, you ask? Well this captain had been commissioned to hunt down every pirate that roamed the seas, and did a damn good job of it too. According to reports, he could see everything, everyone and anything, and that's how his "1,000 Eyes" nickname came about.
He stared at the waves and smiled. "Well Tuggington, I'm coming after you once more. And this time... I will win."

Meanwhile, in the port of Vaximus Mothmaar, a short, hooded figure crept among the crowd that had assembled on the portside. A massive ship, the Queen Redicci III, had docked to load up provisions, and everyone wanted a glimpse of the treasures therein and the noble passenger, Rileius Ambiguous, heir of unknown gender to the throne of the Kingdoms Of Effarn. The short figure crept through the crowd, finding a particularly rich looking gentleman in a top hat, and with nimble fingers reached into his pockets and pulled out the contents, hiding them in his own coat before moving on. No one noticed the small pickpocket, and he soon had gathered an impressive amount of wealth. He retreated to an alleyway behind the Hog's Second Head brothel on Port Street, where he made his home and traded his various stolen trinkets with the whores for food and shelter. Removing his coat, the figure revealed shocking blonde hair and a body too tall to possibly fit in that coat. He turned the coat inside out, put it on, and suddenly Tos Varboz, dock orphan, was lovable rogue and smuggler Tiberius Zeno. But little did he know as he entered the brothel that his life was about to change forever...

Elsewhere, on the island of Angeli, another story was unfolding...
"All cargo loaded and all crew accounted for; ready to set sail captain!" second mate Frank Trivman called out.
"Excellent! Prepare to set sail lads, Vortun awaits us!" Captain Benjamin Jones called out. It was just another day in the line of duty for Second Mate Frank. As one of the chief men aboard his ship, the Grey Eagle; so named for the gray painted bird on the ship's stern. It wasn't a military ship or a pirate ship. Rather, Frank was an officer for the East Gartun Shipping Company; a merchant fleet serving the greater islands of the Aderan Sea.
Home ported at East Gartun, they also served the islands of Vortun, Angeli, Cetlin, Hodria, West Deminoli, East Deminoli, Raglia, Densera, Yaspria and Juntero.
Every island produced goods; but some islands could not make certain ones on their own and required help from other islands in order to acquire such goods. And that was the role of the East Gartun Shipping Company.
Today's cargo- grains from the agrarian island of Angeli, to the major trade hub of Vortun. A voyage like this typically took about 8 hours, but there was a good headwind today, so Frank calculated they could be there in as little as six.
"We get there fast enough, we just might have enough time to pick up a contract bound for East Gartun and make a little more money" Frank informed his captain.
"I like the way you talk Frank... I knew the boss made the right choice, hiring a former naval officer to help run this ship" Captain Jones complimented.
"Ah well, I am grateful to Commodore Wilkins; he was willing to hire me when no one else would" Frank explained.
"Is it because of... the leg?" Captain Jones asked.
"Yea" Frank said with a sigh. He still had nightmares about it; when a fire broke out on his frigate's powder magazine Frank must have gone below decks eight or nine times to save the crew he could. He was on his last trip up when his leg got caught underneath something heavy.
After that... well, it was all a blur to Frank; all he knew for certain was that it cost him his left leg from just below the knee down, and he was honorably discharged after that.
"I'm just glad the wooden leg let's me still walk. Anyway, my watch is in three hours, yes captain?"
"Indeed; go take a rest for now, I have everything under control" Captain Jones assured.
"Yes sir" and Frank left to his quarters.
The three masted ship, manned by a crew of 80, held a great deal of cargo. Sometimes pirates would raid these ships for anything they could get their hands on... Frank had limited experience with pirates, but knew a surefire method for keeping them at bay.
Indeed, four hours into the journey, when a pirate ship did get close, Frank ordered the crew to raise a certain flag... and the pirates turned away after they saw it.
"I don't believe it! How did that work?" One crewman asked.
"That there's a plague flag; used to indicate a ship has sick individuals. They wouldn't dare raid a ship with a contagious disease on it" Frank pointed out.
Indeed, the crew had a good laugh after that, and the sun was just beginning to set by the time they arrived in Vortun.
"I'll be heading to the Inn if you don't mind Captain; I could use a decent meal after that trip" Frank said.
"All right; go right ahead" Captain Jones said as Frank went to the Inn near the harbor entrance.
In another part of the Aderan Sea Region...

Admiral Diesel was waiting for a small-time "pirate scum".
"I'll make quick work of him. Come on men, turn hard to starboard, there's a ship a-comin'!"
Sure enough, a ship appeared, with the pirate flag prominent in the sky.
"All right, let's go kick some pirate ass!" yelled Diesel.
But the pirates had other plans...

Aboard the infamous ship, the 'Scrap Iron Dreadnought', the ship of Captain Barcelo 'Metal Monster' Tuggington, a 3 masted brig, one with a triangular sail, and 24 cannons, 12 on each side. Reinforced with metal no other ship could or dared to support the amount of armor onboard, with secrets only the captain himself knew, Admiral Diesel was in for a tough battle once again...
"Men, get to your guns! I'm too hungover to fight him one on one today, so we'll make sure they won't be pursuin us for a while, is that clear?" ordered Tuggington
"Aye!" shouted the men as cannons, muskets, pistols, and cutlasses were in position and ready for orders...
"Alright... Ready... FIRE, FIRE ALL!!!" screamed Tuggington as the pirate ship wailed on the incoming, unsuspecting navy ship, unaware the pirates would shoot first for a change...

But before Tuggington and his crew could do anything, cannonballs rained down upon them.
"What's going on?!" cried the captain in a rage.
"Thanks for the backup, Steve," said Diesel.
"No problem," said Captain Steve Trevors of the Navy, who had sneaked up upon an unsuspecting Tuggington to help out the leader of the Navy.

At the Inn where Frank was enjoying a meal, he was surrounded by some people who wished to hear stories of combat on the high seas.
"Well, the first thing to know when it comes to sea fighting is to know your cannons, and know your ammunition. You see, when it comes to cannons, we grade them based on the weight of projectiles. 6-pounder, 8-pounder, 10-pounder, etc. Then there is the ammo. Comes in four basic types-
Standard shot; your basic metal cannonball; good at long range and easy to handle. Usually meant to attack a ship's hull directly.
Chain shot; two smaller balls connected by a chain- used primarily to take down sails and masts. You take those down and a ship is going nowhere
Grape shot; ever see a blunderbuss? Now imagine it's twenty times bigger. For when you get up close, grape shot is you you take town the crew of a ship. Sometimes grapeshot is hard to come by, so some people use scattershot; chains, nails, anything you can get your hands on really.
Explosive shot; a ball with a charge in it; explodes on contact with a ship's hull. Nastly little buggers they are, but heavy as hell. You gotta get really close though; their weight makes their range limited. Some people find this aspect cumbersome and prefer to use fireshot- a cannonball covered in a special oil that, when the cannon is fired, sends a literal ball of fire towards the ship. However the oil is very dangerous to handle, so this ammo is only used on the most heavily armored of frigates for maximum protection." Frank went on.
......
"What shot shall we load now sir?" A lieutenant asked his captain in the naval battle that was unfolding.

But, what Captain Trevors didn't suspect, was 5 well placed cannon shots to completely destroy his main mast, marooning his ship and starting a fire on deck...
"How could they react so quickly, we just opened fire?" yelled Trevors in rage
On the Scrap Iron Dreadnought, men had raised a platform with five cannons ontop, with 10 men working each of them...
"I see you got a taste of one of my special weapon decks... I'm called the Metal Monster for many reasons ,and one of those is my dangerous abilities to craft unique weapons and tactics for every situation!" shouted Tuggington in delight
"Damn that Tugginton! This is why he's escaped my clutches for so long! Fire everything at those pirates!" shouted Admiral Diesel, but as they opened fire, the skies began to turn black, and the seas began to churn in an ungodly way...
"Admiral! A storm is brewing! We think a whirlpool will be forming any minute as well!" yelled a navy seaman
"Fall back! IT would be suicide to chase them into a godforsaken storm! The lives of my men are more important then the head of a pirate! I'll track him down again no matter what!" shouted Admiral Diesel in defeat as he had his ship turn around and try to tow Trevors' vessel back to a naval outpost...
"The gods of the sea are with us men! Sail onward into the storm!" shouted Tuggingtoon
"But Captain, isn't that insane?" asked a pirate
"Believe in the ship, and believe in me, are do you think our luck will run out today, my gut's never let us down before..." laughed Tuggington as his men begrudgingly agreed
The Mechanized Pirates had once again escaped Admiral Diesel's clutches, but now were sailing straight into the eye of a storm, with a whirlpool no less...

And in their overconfidence, they had not realized something... Because of the metal armor on the ship, and the other fancy additions like the raise-able platform, the ship was now rather top-heavy, and one strong enough wave would capsize the whole thing. (How's that for increasing the drama? ) ...... "Naval battles can last a few minutes... or a few hours. But it's always important to know yourself and your enemy. Understanding your weapons is one thing, but a great leader know how to use said weapons in such a way, that he can exploit the weakness of his enemy's ship" Frank explained to those listening on.

Meanwhile, Admiral Diesel's crew had returned to rescue Trevor's ship, which was by this time sinking rapidly. The important supplies were moved, maps and other things from the Captain's Cabin were taken aboard Diesel's ship, which, by the way, was named the Annihilator of the Seas, and once everyone was aboard they headed for the nearest harbor.
"Thanks for saving us," said Captain Trevors.
"Least we could do after you helping us with our sworn enemy. Damn you Tuggington..."

"Mr. Pett, how be the ship holding up?" asked Tuggington
Deptford Pett, Tuggington's faithful shipwright, and the genius behind crafting all his crazy ideas, answered the captain honestly, "Some would call this ship top if from outsider's perspective, but my modifications make our ship be able to handle the waves of even a hurricane, but that whirlpool, it might be another story..."
"You're right Mr. Pett, sail straight into it!" laughed Tuggington over the stormy winds and heavy falling rain
"Captain have you lost it??" shouted a crew member
"No, but if we don't sail into the whirlpool and flow with it, it will drag us into it's center and pull us under, sinking us to the ocean floor... If we follow the current, it will be less likely for us all to die!" replied Tuggington
"Make way! Head straight for the whirlpool!" Shouted a pirate as the Scrap Iron Dreadnought entered into the vicious maelstrom...

"In some ways, you can say that on the seas, it's a game of rock, paper, scissors in battle. Ships come in all shapes and sizes, but three primary types dominate the seas" Frank said as he talked to the group.
Sloops- significantly smaller and shorter than other ships, they aren't as well armed as other classes. However, they are the fastest ships available. They usually have only one mast, but some have two depending on the design.
Galleons- They are bigger and have more weapons compared to sloops, but are slower. Merchant ships such as mine typically derive their design from galleons as well. They have at least three masts and three decks, and can hold a lot of cargo
Frigates- These ships are designed solely for the purpose of war, and have the most armament of any ship. Their bows are also designed in such a way to allow for ramming, which can be devastating if done correctly. However, they can be on the slow side and are the hardest to turn of all the ship types.
So a good rule of thumb- sloops are for speed, frigates are for fighting, and galleons are a midpoint between the two" Frank concluded.

Back to the Mechanized Pirates, the crew was bracing themselves to withstand the intense bashing the ship received from the waves of the whirlpool...
"Captain, we're being dragged towards the center! What should we do?" shouted a pirate in despair
"Unload everything we don't need! And then what's remaining shift to one side! We just have to last until the whirlpool subsides!" ordered Tuggington as the men proceeded to do just that...
Crates of ammo and barrels of alcohol, though regretfully dumped, had been tossed overboard, the cannons were left intact, and since most of the men had spent the crew fortune partying the night afore, the crew was flat broke, so dumping treasure was not an issue...
'Everyone, to the right!" shouted Tuggington as the crew leaned towards the right side of the ship, and with a great heave to the right by the helmsman, Tiergan, the ship was shot out of the now subsiding maelstrom and the ship was rocketed out of the remaining storm...
The Mechanized Pirates were now back in calmer seas...
"Captain, we tossed most of our supplies like you said, plus our ship's taking so much of a beating we would most likely lose in a battle to plunder a merchant vessel, so what be the plan?" asked Pett
"Well, we sail to the closest island of course, and what be that?" asked Tuggington
"An island called Vaximus something or other..." replied Taylor the navigtor
"Set sail for there then!"
"Aye!"
The Mechanized Pirates had a heading once more, and fate had something else in store for them as well...

"So what if the fighting gets on the ship itself, man to man?" Someone asked Frank
"Then that's where things get interesting" Frank explained. "At range, its firearms that dominate. Smoothbore muskets primarily. Deadly if they strike, but beyond 100 yards they can't hit anything" Frank explained. "Though recently someone figured out that giving the lead balls a spin makes them more accurate. These "rifles" take a little longer to reload, but extend the range to 300 yards easy.
"What about flintlock pistols?"
"You'll be lucky to hit anything beyond 30 feet. Though pirates will typically go into battle with 5 or 6 holstered and loaded. Though some have something called a duck foot pistol; you pull the trigger and 3 shots are fired at once. Compared to blunderbusses though, they are not as popular."
"And when you run out of powder and shot?"
"Then out come the blades. Now the popular choice is a sword called a cutlass, but really you'll find just about every kind of blade out there. Knives, axes, even machetes. Pirates are crafty; they aren't as well supplied as an established navy- but if they want something specific, they will hunt it down or create it themselves. Make no mistake- people will romanticize battle for glory- but there is nothing glorious about the kind of combat that goes on in ship combat" Frank explained.

The Saltash was docked in the port at Vaximus Mothmaar. A single-sail sloop originally of naval origin, Tiberius had made more than a few modifications to the ship. It now contained no less than eight hidden cannons, a spacious hold, and comfortable quarters for twelve. The Saltash, however, could be safely sailed with just three, and the ship currently held six; Zeno, two lads of about 15, Brinley and Bronson, and three women they'd picked up on the pier because such was the way in medieval times, Elga, Letha, and Rhyannon.
"Hurry it up, get that salted pork aboard! We're bound for Vortun with no time to spare!" Tiberius ordered, climbing the mast to get a better view. The Queen Redicci III was still docked in port, and the ships massive scale was clear even from this distance. Rumor said the Queen Redicci III was a mile long and the deck was 1000 feet high. This was of course ridiculous, but 900 feet long and 70 feet high seemed like a not unreasonable measure from this distance, and that wasn't even counting the ornately carved, gold-embossed bowspirit. The ship was well-defended, and Tiberius often fantasized about commandeering the ship and claiming the hand of Rileius Ambiguous, but he knew full well how ridiculous that idea was.
It was nightfall by the time the speedy little sloop sped off, passing right by the royal frigate, which even at night was lit by thousands of torches and those new-fangled "electro-lights" the Nurviun Wizards had created. Tiberius cast a few lines behind the ship and raised the flag of the Gal De La Rocha Trading Co, creating an alibi for them to sail past the ship without so much as a glance from the crew.
Or so he thought. In an office on one of the Queen Redicci III's upper decks, a lone colonel watched the ship depart. Like Diesel, he was an officer in the Effarn Navy that patrolled the Aderan Sea with an iron fist, but this man was no ordinary colonel. Just what he was thinking as he watched the ship sail can not be adequately put into words, but it's telling that he proceeded to viciously sign a trade order with his initials, TGC, and then walk above deck to order a round of mead for the night watch.

Meanwhile, Jack Sproket had arrived at Vaximus. After having been thrown out of a pub for fighting while intoxicated, he roamed the streets in a drunken rage.
"How could I ha' stooped so loow. It's all his fault! Damn you Tuggington!"
Elsewhere, Tuggington had no idea he was headed to the place his old crony was currently located in.

(Btw Toz- even if 8 is the exact number of cannons on the ship- 4 on each side, because it takes 4-5 people to man one cannon a sloop like that would need at least a crew of 40; unless that is just the major crew/ they are a different kind of cannons? Either way, looking forward to the adventures you'll have with that crew)
At the Inn, Frank wrapped up his stories. "And that about does it; the high seas can be a dangerous place, so it is important to remember and understand these things. I'm must be going now; good night."
Frank returned to his quarters on the Grey Eagle; as an officer he was priveledged enough to own a cot while the captain had a bed and the crew had hammocks.
"Heads up Frank! Got a unique job for tomorrow" captain Jones said.
"Special cargo?" Frank asked.
"No; there was a pirate-navy conflict about 20 miles northwest of here (not the conflict Tug/Eyes had). We've been given salvage rights for the area; got to clean it up of debris and recover any bodies. I've got some men loading on ice for the bodies and some extra skiffs; but I'll need you to direct some boats once they are in the water" Captain Jones explained.
"Understood sir; good night" Frank replied.
Frank stayed up a little longer, working on some sketches he had come up with. They were for what he called a "self contained cartridge" and "breechloading cannon" and they were a pet project of his ever since his navy says.
"By self containing the cartridge, and loading it from here, reload times would be substantially cut. When I get the money I should invest in this project; could make a difference in the long run" he thought. He continued working on his plans.
