The necromantic decay of the 1300s resulted in the near complete loss of information on the art; and despite the necromantic renaissance of the 1700s and modern usage, much is still not understood.
One thing that is certain is that Necromancy requires Dark Magic aptitude to use, as it is The Darkness that makes necromancy possible. However, one of the few surviving texts from prior to the necromantic decay makes reference to “three levels” of necromancy. Upon translation, the text revealed as such:
Base Necromancy;
Dark magic only- the simple act of animating corpses and manipulating them like a puppeteer. The most prolific form of necromancy
”programmable” necromancy:
achieved by very few necromancers, requires dark magic and lightning magic. The combination is said to be able to allow the reanimated corpses some degree of autonomy. Modern necromancers confirm its viability, but admit that “programmed” corpses are only capable of simple tasks at best.
”Apex Necromancy”
Described in hypothetical terms in the text, indicating it has never been proven. It theorizes that in the combination of light, dark and lightning magic, the ultimate form of necromancy is achieved. Dark magic to enable it, lighting magic to “program” the dead, and light magic to “enable the body to heal, allowing the undead to be more useful”
Has never been proven because there are currently few accounts of mages with this exact combination of aptitudes; those that did usually shunned their dark aptitude in order to become healing mages.
As is, Dark and light is a rare combination to have, because like earth and air, they are “contrary elements” and as such rarely manifest together.
Many are dismissive of this combination being possible- pointing out that because light magic causes the darkness to dissipate, “such a combination is simply not possible”
