Since 1980, Iron Maiden have proved to be one of the greatest metal bands in the world. Not only are they fun and enjoyable to listen to, but their lyrics are some of the most well-written in the genre's history. In celebration of this, the following are 21 great Iron Maiden lyrics, for one reason or another.

21. The Angel and the Gambler Virtual XI (1998)
The lyric: Don't you think I'm a savior? Don't you think I could save you? Don't you think I could save your life?
Why is it great? This one isn't "great" so much as it is memorable. You see, in "The Angel and the Gambler", these three lines are repeated a whopping 22 times in total. Many consider it overkill and consider the song one of the worst; I myself like it. Still, these three lines have gone down in Maiden history as ones that you won't forget any time soon.

20. Moonchild Seventh Son of a Seventh Son (1988)
The lyric: I am he, the bornless one The fallen angel watching you Babylon, the scarlet whore I'll infiltrate your gratitude! Don't you try to save your son Kill him now and save the young ones Be the mother of a birth strangled babe Be the devil's own; Lucifer's my name!
Why is it great? After a steady build-up in guitars and synth, the first song on SSOASS erupts with a fury as we find the devil himself speaking to a soon-to-be mother about her child. The "seventh son of a seventh son" will be born with great powers that will ultimately lead to his undoing; the devil tells her to kill her son or he will take her son's soul and use his powers against the world. Ultimately, the son lives...

19. Children of the Damned The Number of the Beast (1982)
The lyric: Now it's burning his hands, he's turning to laugh Smiles as the pain sears his flesh Melting his face, screaming in pain Peeling the skin from his eyes Watch him die, according to plan He's dust on the ground; what did we learn?
Why is it great? "Children of the Damned" is a warning song against blind prejudice and following a mob, condemning others who don't seem to fit. It's a song decrying witch hunts, and the visual lyrics and the way Bruce sings them helps sell the narrative.

18. The Edge of Darkness The X Factor (1995)
The lyrics: Here I am, the knife in my hand And now I understand why the genius must die!
Why is it great? As a whole, "The Edge of Darkness" doesn't have the best Maiden lyrics. They're mostly pulled straight from Apocalypse Now, but the song still works not only as a tribute to the film but as an anti-war song. Still, as I said, not some of Maiden's best lyrics... except for this one, and it's not the line itself so much as the way Blaze Bayley sings it. The pure emotion shed forth is what makes it so memorable.

17. Blood Brothers Brave New World (2000)
The lyric: When you think that we've used all our chances And the chance to make everything right Keep on making the same old mistakes Makes un-tipping the balance so easy When we're living our lives on the edge Say a prayer on the book of the dead
Why is it great? "Blood Brothers" is a song about getting along with others. We're all humans, we're all equally important, we're 'blood brothers'. It's about moving passed the past and accepting everyone for what they are, despite the rest of the world trying desperately to keep shoving faults into our faces.

16. Fortunes of War The X Factor (1995)
The lyric: I'm scarred for life But it's not my flesh that's wounded So how can I face the torment alone? The vivid scenes And all the recurring nightmares I lay there and sweat until it gets light...
Why is it great? "Fortunes of War" is about PTSD. Maiden really make it seem real, particularly with Blaze Bayley singing them. They feel like they know what they're talking about.
