"Bloody Hell; what was Elvira thinking?!" Shakes said as he observed the trashed room. The officer of their employer, Gerard "Jerry" Myers, had been utterly ransacked. Shakes and his comrade Lion were searching the place from top to bottom, trying to determine what exactly had transpired here.
"The safe is blown clean open; the money is all gone but the paperwork was left behind" Lion observed.
"Elvira isn't shallow enough to just trash Myers' place for no reason and rob him, no there's something deeper going o- WHAT THE F*CK?!" Shakes screamed in disgust. Lion turned around and they finally saw it. On the chair behind the desk, was an arm. A human arm. And held in place with a dagger was a note.
"I resign- Elvira" Lion read. Then he looked on and was horrified, "Bloody hell... that's Myers' tattoo?" he asked, seeing a distinct shape on the forearm.
"No doubt about it... and that's the ring he always wore" Shakes added. They managed to put two and two together rather quickly.
"This doesn't add up... even with her skill Myers was a good foot taller and 40 pounds heavier than her... there's no way she alone held him down and cut his arm off" Lion observed.
"And I don't know about you... but while Elvira was strong enough to hold her own, even she had trouble kicking down doors" Shakes observed, noticing that the office door had been forced open.
"I don't like this, we gotta get out of here, now. If Elvira's got new friends, chances are she's going to turn on us too" Lion concluded.
"Agreed, let's get what we can carry and get out of here" Shakes said.
"And go where?" Lion pointed out.
"Me and Ironside go way back; if he can put in a good word for us Bennet will hire us no problem" Shakes assured as he grabbed a few things.
"Even then, I bet Bennet will take us on anyway... think about it, Bennet's only had one assassin in his pocket for, what, two years? We'll be a welcome addition to his business" Lion explained.
"I hope you're right... life as an assassin gets harder every month" Shakes noted.
"You're kidding, right? Think about it, back in the day there must have been forty assassins trying to make a living in London, but now it's just you, me, Ironside and those other two... er..." Lion began, trying to remember
"Rawhide and Juno" Shakes clarified.
"Yea, exactly. And Ironside is going to be working with us, so we're only competing with two other assassins, and their one employer." Lion declared
"While I will concede that having to only compete with Carnegie's outfit is refreshing, look at the other side of the coin! Walters died and Quincy retired, so the only guys giving out contracts now are Raleigh and Hughes. There may be folks willing to pick apples but the trees have little fruit" Shakes pointed out.
"Well standing around here moping about it isn't going to solve anything. Let's get a move on" Lion stated.
"Right; I'll reach out to Ironside and..." Shakes was about to say something when the phone began ringing. He picked it up "Hello?"
"Hey, Myers, it's Hughes. Big news, I got some new contracts you're going to want to offer your boys" the voice on the other end said.
"Hughes, this is Shakes. Myers' operation has been compromised, we think he was captured." Shakes said
"What? Eh, guess I'll offer it to Carnegie then" Hughes said before hanging up.
"He didn't sound shocked" Lion observed.
"He's in it for the money... we all are, remember?" Shakes pointed out.
"Yea... the nine of us are in it for the money" Lion agreed. Such was the life of an assassin. No questions asked, just contracts and payment. The two left and headed into the night, ready to work for their new employer.
