It had been total chaos. One minute, the plane was flying over Egypt... they were still a few hours from their destination. The next, the plane suffered a major mechanical failure and was loosing altitude quickly.
The surviving members of the Blade Syndicate feared for their lives as the ground rapidly approached. Wilcox strapped himself into his seat and tried to brace himself for the inevitable. Palepu was frantically fighting with the controls as he struggled to keep the plane level. Cambria, frozen with fear, couldn't do anything except consider... a faster way out. He had kept a knife on him for utility and survival, but now had to consider a purpose he wished did not have to come to fruition.
and towards the back, Elvira and Ruocco, strapped into their seats and preparing for impact.
"I trust Palepu; if anyone can get us to safely land in these conditions, it's him" he assured.
"let's hope you're right" Elvira replied grimly as the duo sat and waited.
Palepu was able to keep the plane level. He tried to release the landing gear, but there was no point. There was nothing but sand everywhere. Then, as he was about to call to Wilcox, there was a giant impact, and everything went black.
......
Elvira and Ruocco regained consciousness as they felt a hot wind blow against their faces. They looked out to see that their plane had broken into two pieces, with a sizeable amount of debris between the tail and nose.
Banged up and bruised, the two were relatively unharmed as they emerged from the tail section and headed towards the front where the other three were. It did not look good. As they entered the front half, they found Cambria slumped over. Ruocco tried to find a sign of life, but could tell that his friend did not make it.
"snapped neck... guess he wasn't quite sure how to brace himself. He didn't suffer though" Ruocco explained as he closed Cambria's eyes.
Not too far away, Elvira found Wilcox. Though he did properly brace, it ultimately did not matter. During the impact, glass had shattered and the way the shards hit him... Elvira could hardly bring herself to look, but where they hit him, it was fatal. "I'm sorry it ended this way... you deserved better than this" Elvira said as she closed his eyes.
Finally, they made their way to the cockpit door and went to open it. Inside they found Palepu, but were horrified.
A large metal chunk impaled itself through his chest, and he had lost a great deal of blood. He was still alive, but barely.
"Ruocco... Elvira... where are..."
"Dead, Palepu. We're the only ones left" Ruocco explained.
"No... you are. I'm done for" Palepu replied.
"Don't talk like that... we can save you" Elvira assured. But Ruocco was not so sure. Looking him over, Ruocco sighed sadly.
"I'm so sorry Palepu... there's little that can be done" Ruocco began.
"How long do I have?"
"15... 20 minutes. Even if we stopped the bleeding, without a hospital little can save you. I'm afraid..." and Ruocco looked out, seeing nothing but endless waves of sand in every direction.
"then... then at least grant me one last request" Palepu asked
"Anything" Ruocco assured.
"Don't let me suffer. Just give me something... for the pain..." Palepu asked. Ruocco knew exactly what to do. Running into the debris field, he found an intact first aid kit and pulled out some syringes containing morphine. He then ran up to his friend. "It's all right Palepu... everything will be all right" Ruocco assured, doing his best to put on a straight face for his friend.
"Don't let my death trouble you Ruocco... live the rest of your life knowing that you did everything you could. You did not fail to save me... you helped me get through my final minutes" Palepu assured. Ruocco nodded before taking the morphine syringes and injecting them into Palepu. Palepu relaxed as the morphine kicked in, and he began to go to sleep.
"Rest well, my friend" Ruocco said before at last leaving the cockpit. Elvira waited on the other side.
"What now?" She asked.
"Grab the survival supplies and let's get out of here... we need to clear out before someone finds this wreckage" Ruocco explained as the two of them rounded up their personal belongings, plus a few extra things before they began the long trek towards what they hoped was civilization.
......
That night, they made a camp and Elvira and Ruocco sat around a small fire. They were trying to figure out their next move.
"If we could just find out where we are... we can head towards civilization" Elvira explained.
"I know, but that could be tricky. We spent a good 20 minutes flying over nothing but desert. Getting oriented could be tricky" Ruocco explained.
"I'll get some water boiling... why don't you see if there are any lights in the distance" Elvira proposed.
"On it" Ruocco said as he stood up and began looking around. As Elvira took out a pot from the supplies and began holding over the fire, he heard a strange sound coming from Ruocco's direction. She looked up and saw him standing up... but it sounded like he was crying. It wasn't like him to do so... but she had a pretty good idea why.
"Whatever happened in the cockpit between him and Palepu... must have really affected him" she thought to herself.
