Rime of the Numbered Diesel
Hear the Rime of the Numbered Diesel
See his eye as he stops one of three
Mesmerizes one of the new engines
Stay here and listen to the nightmares that have been.
And the music plays on, as the controller passes by
Caught by his spell and the diesel tells his tale.
Driven south to the land of gold dust and magic
To a place where nobody's been
Through the wonder lies an engine
Hailed in God's name, hoping good luck she brings.
And the diesel carries on, back to the North
Over the rails and Lady follows on.
The diesel crashes the magical engine
His brothers cry against what he's done
But when the day clears, they justify him
And make themselves a part of the crime.
Rolling on and on and down along the line
Rolling on and on and forwards 'til all are calm.
The diesel begins with his vengeance
To rid the world of the magic begun
The engines blame bad luck on the diesel
Upon his claw, a curse has been hung.
And the curse goes on and on down the line
And the curse goes on and on for the diesel and all to see.
"Day after day, day after day,
we stuck nor breath nor motion
as idle as a painted ship upon a painted ocean
Water, water everywhere and
all the men did shrink.
Water, water everywhere but only sludge to drink."
There calls the diesel
Then he roars down the line
But how can he outrun with no help within him nor by his side?
See...onward he comes
Onward he nears out of the sun
See, he has no crew
He has no life, wait but here's two.
Lady and the E2,
They throw their dice for the doom
They win and the diesel, he belongs to her now.
Then, over the bridge
He goes ahead, falling towards death
She, she, Life in Death.
She lets him live, through the sludge.
"One after one by the star dogged moon,
too quick for groan or sigh
he turned his face with a ghastly pang
and cursed me with his eye
two thousand pounds of living lead
(and I heard nor sigh nor groan)
with heavy thump, a lifeless lump,
he, crushed with despair and with sludge."
The curse it lives on in his eyes
The diesel wished he'd die
Along with the magic
But it lived on, so did he.
And by the light of the moon
He prays for its beauty not doom
With heart he blesses it
God's creations all of it too.
Then the spell starts to break
The claw falls from his deck
Sinks down like lead into the sea
Then down in falls comes the CRANES!
Hear the groans of the working cranes
See them stir and they start to rise
The diesel lifted by good spirits
None of them speak yet they're lively in his eyes
And revenge is still sought, penance starts again
Cast into a trance and the nightmare carries on.
Now the curse is finally lifted
And the diesel sights his home
Spirits come from all of his brothers
Form their own light and the diesel's left alone.
And then a man came walking towards him
It was a joy he could not believe
The Fat Controller, his son and his creator,
Penance of life will fall onto him.
And the barge sinks like lead into the sea
And the Controller buys the diesel for his rails.
The diesel's bound to tell of his story
To tell this tale wherever he goes
To teach God's word by his own example
That we must love all the magic that exists in this plain.
And the engines are sad and wiser now
And the tale goes on and on and on....
