"Not yet bu... GET DOWN!" shouted Gunnarson as rapid fire of bullets burst through the window, nearly hitting Gent if it wasn't for Gunnarson leaping to knock the man over, being grazed by a few bullets in the process
"Gunnarson!" I shouted.
.....
At London Docks, a familiar group was getting off a cargo ship and meeting with their contacts...
"Mr. Finnegan, pleasure to see you personally came for this mission, how's the boss?" asked a subordinate
"I'm not in the mood for small talk O'Donnell, tell me anything we can use to find that bastard Drugg, I still have to get back at him for all the trouble he's caused us since the weapons fiasco and the german spy situation I took care of..." ordered Finn
"Well, one of our brokers 'One-eyed Jack' has been found dead this morning, and the rumor floating around is the he's been putting up money to help from the Black Scorpion..." replied O'Donnell
"If he's tied to the Black Scorpion I know where to look, come on boys, gather the weapons, we're heading to conduct our little 'investigation'..." answered Murphy
"Where to then Finn?" asked Murphy
"To London's famous East End of course..."

Back at the station, once the hail of bullets stopped the car was forced to drive away once the police started returning fire.
After the chaos had subsided, Gent called out "Everyone all right?"
Fortunately, other than a few grazes no one was hurt. "But who could have done this?" I asked.
"There's only one group I can think of brazen enough to do something like that... the Irish mob must be back in town" Gunnarson concluded.
"Funny you mention them actually" Gent said. "we found some evidence to suggest that One-Eyed Jack was connected to them" he continued.
"Could they have killed him?" Gunnarson asked.
"Unlikely. So Gunnarson, why the visit. Something you want to ask?" Gent inquired.
"Yes; I wanted to know if there was anything found on the murders yet; anything at all" Gunnarson asked.
"I'll find out now; Greene, Walden, any developments on the One Eyed Jack or Wright case?" He called out.

"None, sir."
"I see."
"If I may ask Gent," said Gunnarson, "why do you think it is unlikely that the Irish Mob killed One-Eyed Jack?"

"This doesn't match their style... in the past when the mob killed an associate, it was quick and brutal. A shotgun blast, clubbing, it made a statement in that way. But One-Eyed Jack, again, took one bullet to his good eye. Like you said, Gunnarson, if we could figure out the message here, might give us a lead" Gent explained.
"That's what makes this so tough; I just can't make heads or tails of the message" Gunnarson explained.
"Well, what can we do next? Surely there must be some way to proceed" I pointed out.

"All right," said Gunnarson. "Here's what we'll do. I'll..."
"Message for you sir," said an officer walking into the room.
"What is it?" asked Gent.
"It's..."

...rather important, from the lab. They've finished analyzing the evidence from the recent murders" he said.
"I'll get to that in just a moment constable. What were you saying Gunnarson?" Gent asked.

"Well, the first part of my plan is..."
"Sir! This is very important!"
"Not now, Dwight! I'm busy!!"

"You'll ha e to excuse him Gunnarson, he's only been on the force 3 months" Gent explained.
"Quite all right, now as I was trying to tell you, the first part of my plan involves..."

"...the Irish Mob themselves."
"How so?"
"Well, we lure them to..."

...the Callaghan Inn; back when they were active it was a popular spot for them, and I've got a hunch they will be keen on returning" Gunnarson said.
"Wait, what does that have to do with anything? I told you, the mob was not involved in the One-Eyed Jack murder" Gent reminded him. "At any rate, I need leads on the Drugg case, I told you that!" Gent said, sounding more desperate than ever.

"Alright Gent, now listen here!" Gunnarson said, standing up. "Your priorities might be finding out more about Drugg - mine aren't. I've told you already that I am going to find out what happened to Ronald Wright, and there is nothing you can do about it. I am not one of your men. If you really want to know about Drugg, get someone else to do it. You should have enough men here to do so. I will not be helping until much later, so stop trying to change my mind!"
I admit it was an awkward situation, especially for me and Constable Dwight (who had not left yet), as we were stuck in the middle of this.
Gunnarson was looking frustrated, and Gent was looking defeated. But to our surprised, the policeman began to laugh.
"You win, Gunnarson. I'm sorry. I've just had a lot on my plate recently and got ahead of myself. My apologies."
"It's alright," said Gunnarson chuckling. "Now to answer your question on 'what does that have to do with anything'..."

"Even though the mob may not have had anything to do with one-eyed Jack's murder, they might know something that can point in a direction. Perhaps they have an anecdote or story that can shed some light on the message of One-Eyed Jack's murder" Gunnarson concluded.
"Makes sense I suppose. Anyway, you were saying Dwight?" Gent asked.
"Well, two things actually. We managed to find the taxi driver that took the three men who murdered Wright away from the crime scene; he's in the interview room now" he said.
"All right, excellent. And the lab work?"
"We ran some tests on the fired bullets and shell casing from the Wright murder... three distinct guns, one has been linked to a firearm owned by Robert Klein; we had it on record from another case. And other gun, also linked to one from another case, belong to Joseph Barron, another associate of One-Eyed Jack, and the last one... nothing as of yet" he explained.
"It's a start I suppose; anything else?"
"Yea... One-Eyed Jack's bullet is consistent with a .45 caliber... but we failed to link it to an individual weapon" he said.
"Anything outside the ballistics?" Gent asked.
"Only substantial thing of note concerns Jack... his body stank of alcohol sir; indicating he was rather drunk when he was shot" Dwight finished.
"That early in the day?" Gent asked, confused.
......
In the interview room, Detective Walton sat with the taxi driver; he held up three mugshots that had been on file that matched the sketches based on the witness testimony.
"Are these the men you took into your cab that day?"
"Yes; that's them. Is there a problem sir?" the driver asked.
"They murdered a man" Walton said bluntly.
"What?! Though now that you mention it, when I think back they did look rather nervous; almost as if they were trying to hide something" the driver thought back

"Well sir, according to gossip-" here Dwight coughed "-One-Eyed Jack apparently began each day with a bottle of scotch, shortly followed by a bottle of whiskey, and continued through the day drinking nothing but alcoholic drinks. Quite often he was drunk."
"I see," said Gent.

"That doesn't sound like One-Eyed Jack though; he was quite good at what he did" Gunnarson pointed out.
"Well, he was good at holding his liquor; he drank a lot, but he rarely showed the typical symptoms of being drunk; must have been the Irish in him" Dwight speculated.
"That... sounds kinda condescending..." Gunnarson said to Dwight.
"Oh please, we all know it's true" Dwight shot back
(remember- during this time in history the Irish did not like the Brits and vice versa)
......
"So where did you take the men in the cab?" Walton asked.
"Outside some old looking apartment building... Alderman Road, I believe. I can't remember the number though" the driver replied.

"I see," said Walton. "Now then..."
But just then, who should appear but none other than Adolf Gunnarson (and myself of course), having finished discussion with Gent.
"Oh... Gunnarson... and Co. I see..." Walton sneered.

"What's the meaning of this Gunnarson? This is my case and my witness" Walton pointed out. "I'll have you know that I've already got some good information out of him" he added.

Walton looked over his notes, "I have everything I need; he's all yours if you want him. I apologize for another detective having to ask you the same exact questions a second time sir; but it's probably Gent's orders so there's nothing I can do" Walton said to the driver.
"Eh, doesn't bother me" the driver said with a shrug.
Walton left, and Gunnarson sat down.
"Now then, where should I start..." he said to himself; he had a few questions in mind.

"...alright, first question: What color was the apartment building?"
"Eh? What does... I mean... brown? Why?"
"Oh, no reason. Second question: Did any of the men have fish tattoos on their ankles?"
"Wha... no... I mean I don't think so..."
"Third question: Did any of your tires get punctured shortly after you dropped the men off?"
"Yes but... what the hell does that have to do with anything?!"

"I mean seriously! They were wearing long pants, how would I know what tattoos were on their ankles?!" The Taxi driver fumed, now thinking this man was a waste of time.
"Calm down sir; Gunnarson has a way of finding out useful information" I assured.
"Again I ask, what does any of that have to do with anything?" the driver asked.
"If my hunch is correct... they were trying to kill you after you dropped them off" Gunnarson replied.
"What?"
