(Gent is not in charge of Gunnarson, he's an unofficial / private detective. That means he chooses what cases to do and which ones not to do. He can work with the police but he isn't part of them. He could just plainly refuse Gent right there.)
"Scotland- get me to Euston train station, quickly" Gunnarson replied.
-----------
I had been working all morning in the garden. At this point, I was tired out, and decided to take a rest in a hammock.

(Gent meant that he was desperate; he was asking Gunnarson as a friend; not ordering him outright. Also- technically speaking the police still have the authority to bar him from certain cases when they are involved)
"Gunnarson has been laying low for a while" I thought to myself. "I hope everything is all right" I thought to myself- it had been a while since my last phone call or letter from Gunnarson.

I dozed off... and when I awoke there was Gunnarson standing right in front of me.
"Gaah!" I said, and tumbled off of the hammock.
"Pardon me, my friend!" Gunnarson said.
"What the devil are you-" I stopped. "Oh! Gunnarson! How nice to see you again."

"Good to see you again Hartley; I was wondering if I could talk to you" Gunnarson explained.
"Sure, what is it? I mean, you could have simply sent a letter or called me on the phone, but it is still nice to see you again" I said.

"Writing a letter would have taken too long... as to the phone call... well anyways, I was wondering if you could help me out on a case."
"Oh!" I said. "Certainly! Always happy to help."
"I have a sneaking suspicion that this case may be a 'part two' of our last case together," Gunnarson said further, "but I am not sure yet."
"Indeed?" I said. "I'm interested, tell me more."

"Well, Have you heard the news yet about Dr. Drugg being broken out of jail?" Gunnarson asked.
"Yes, it was all over the papers. Did Gent ask you to look into this?" I asked.
"Indeed; you see, I have reason to suspect that Dr. Drugg may have connections to The Black Scorpion" Gunnarson explained.
"But weren't they taken down?" I asked, confused.
"Not quite- one of their lieutenants slipped through the cracks, and there's eyewitness evidence that places him as one of the men at his breakout from prison" Gunnarson said.
"What else can you tell me?" I asked.

"Well, there's a separate murder which I think might somehow be connected."
"Indeed?"
"Yes. This is one of my 'hunches' though, I have no proof, but something tells me that it's more than what it seems."

"what leads you to that conclusion?" Hartley asked.
"Well, first there was this innocent man, Ronald Wright. Borrowed money from One-Eyed Jack, failed to pay him back, and was killed by some of his associates. Then a few hours later One-Eyed Jack himself was killed"
"One of the Dirty Four is dead?!" I said in shock. "Wait, you think One-Eyed Jack's death is somehow connected to the Drugg escape?" I asked, confused.

"I'm not sure. I have no proof, no evidence... yet my gut feeling tells me that somehow, one way or another, the two - well, technically three - cases are connected."

"Well, all good stories start at the beginning, so why don't you start there?" I pointed out.
"Ok. First, Drugg escaped from jail, with the help of the last lieutenant of The Black Scorpion. A few days later, Ronald Wright is killed, right in front of my eyes, by One-Eyed Jack's associates for failing to pay a debt. Not even a day later, One-Eyed Jack is dead. Who killed him, I don't know, but based on how he was killed, his killer wants to send a message" Gunnarson concluded.
"So... where do you stand now? What's the next move?" I asked.

"Eliminate any witnesses." Gunnarson said.
I ducked out of the way just in time to avoid the dagger in Gunnarson's hand. Jumping up, I noticed a glazed look in his eye, similar to what I'd seen and heard of on past Drugg victims. I immediately knew what had happened. Drugg or one of his associates had gotten ahold of Gunnarson, and were using him to get rid of any loose ends from the last case. And they'd decided to start with me, it seemed.

Meanwhile, in a quiet part of London...
"Did it work?" Anthony Wallace asked one of his associates.
"Yea; I managed to slip him it just before he boarded the train; it should kick in about five minutes after meeting Hartley" he explained.
"Well, it better still be good; heaven knows how old that dose was, and that was the last bit we had" Wallace explained.
"You mean Drugg still hasn't woke up?" His subordinate said, shocked.
"Still in the coma; and heaven knows how long it will take before he's fully aware; the force of the explosion definitely caused a concussion" Wallace explained.
"Well, at least we got a cane for him- that limp will slow him down a lot" another subordinate said.
The remaining Black Scorpion members looked on as Drugg continued to sleep.
......
Hartley was still dodging Gunnarson's attacks.
"Snap out of it Gunnarson! This isn't you!" I screamed, trying to find an opening to restrain him.

But he never responded. I swung my fist - Gunnarson staggered back and fell down unconscious.
I took him inside. He awoke several hours later.
"Eh? Where am I?"

"Inside my brother's house Gunnarson; you've been out cold for a while" I said as he started coming around.
"Is he finally awake?!" Roger called from down the hall.
"Yes brother, he's awake at last" I called back. Gunnarson asked what happened.
"Well, long story short, you tried to kill me with a dagger and I had to knock you out cold while the drugs inside you wore off?" I explained.
"I was drugged?"
"As far as I can see it; why else would you attack me with a dagger when you have your service revolver?" I pointed out.

"Better question would be, why would I attack you in the first place?" Gunnarson sat up. "Ooh, my head is sore."
"I don't doubt it," I said.

"At any rate, like I said chances are you were drugged; only logical conclusion as far as I can see it" I explained.
"I'll take your word for it for now" Gunnarson replied.
"So what are you going to do now? Back to London?" I asked.

"Yes, you will come, right?"
"Oh! Yes, of course. If you will give me a little time to finish some things..."

So, after I had packed a bag and took care of my remaining business, it had not even be two hours and we were back at the train station, looking to board the first train back to London.
"So what exactly do we need to do once we get back to London?" I asked.

"I need to check in with Gent first," said Gunnarson. "I wanted to ask him something that I forgot." "You can't just call him?" I asked. Gunnarson stared. "I could... but I think I'd rather speak to him in person." "I see." (I think that's gonna become a running gag throughout this book. )

It had been several hours, but once we had gotten back to London, we proceeded immediately to Scotland Yard, where Gunnarson went to Gent's office.
"Oh Gunnarson; and Mr. Hartley, hello there. What brings you back? Any leads on the Drugg case?" Gunnarson asked.
